Aeterna
Taking into account their entire discography, I'd probably say Muse generally fit into Alt. Rock. I just categorise them by song at this point though, as opposed to trying to categorise the entire band. Just because you like it doesn't mean it isn't generic though. Alternative Rock is definitely a very generic term/genre, the fact that it's 'hard to define' and pin down kinda proves that 'cause it's a pretty broad, non-specific, umbrella term. It's hard to explain, but myself and a few people I know don't like most music that isn't defined as alternative. Surely me pretty much only liking every alternative band I listen to isn't a coincidence? To me, there's something similar between even The Arctic Monkeys and Nirvana that I can't quite describe. There's something that links alternative music and I can't describe it. Edit: From Wikipedia: 'distorted guitar sound, subversive and/or transgressive lyrics and generally a nonchalant, defiant attitude'

Edit: From Wikipedia: 'distorted guitar sound, subversive and/or transgressive lyrics and generally a nonchalant, defiant attitude' I'm not really sure what you're saying. All I'm saying is that 'Alternative rock' is a generic label because it has a very broad definition that can be applied to a bunch of different bands, as the quote you provided shows. Also, if you wanna get picky, I wouldn't class Arctic Monkeys or Nirvana as Alt. Rock. AM are generally indie/psychedelic/blues rock and Nirvana are predominantly grunge. Ceebs getting into a genre debate though.
MartianSpaghettiRider
I don't think alternative rock is a generic genre. Whenever I hear any alternative rock band, I love it. More than bands of other genres. You've misunderstood: "generic" was referred to the definition in itself, not to the quality of the genre.
