Matt Bellamy and Dominic Howard from Muse stopped by The Kevin & Bean Show this morning to talk about headlining KROQ Weenie Roast Y Fiesta 2015, opening for the Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and their forthcoming album, Drones.

“We did the Inland Invasion a bunch of years ago, around Absolution in 2003 or something, and then we’ve done [Almost] Acoustic Christmas at least 2 or 3 times, and every time I remember The Killers being there. Every time I remember watching The Killers going, ‘Damn they’re good,” says front man Matt Bellamy. “But yeah, first time, looking very much forward to it.”

“The first US tour we ever did was a great tour. We were lucky enough to be the opening act first on, then it was the Foo Fighters, then it was Chili Peppers. It was the Californication Tour in 1999, and we just did the East Coast. But that’s really where we cut our teeth and we looked up to both of those bands and thought ‘Wow, we really need to up our game,” continues Bellamy.

In regards to the band’s forthcoming album, Drones, Bellamy says that “there’s kind of a loose, actually it’s a pretty specific, narrative that runs through the first part of the album and ends on this song called ‘Aftermath.’ It kind of follows a journey… the album is a bit dark. It’s not kind of morning chats, but it’s about the journey into becoming a psychopath and losing empathy, and it’s kind of like a metaphor for what’s happening in the world. Drone warfare and all this kind of stuff is going on where it’s becoming acceptable to live without empathy, becoming very clinical and efficient in making decisions without emotion…taking humans out of the equation basically. The album sort of explores that journey in its sort of darkest formats.”

Muse will be headlining the KROQ Weenie Roast Y Fiesta on Saturday, May 16th at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 1st, at 12pm via Ticketmaster.com.

Pre-order the band’s forthcoming album Drones (due out June 9th) on iTunes.
