Clunge
Some of the early Drones tour shows were really great, looking back. That period from album launch through Download and the European festivals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cplL6Dabj0M And obvs Werchter too was amazing. It's remarkable how much Matt's voice deteriorated . Edited May 27, 2017 by Clunge
serpentsatellite
The festivals were really amazing. I watched most of them streaming and never got sick of them. I couldn't believe how they just fell apart as soon as the regular tour started. What does the band think the difference is with a festival crowd? Why did they deserve better gigs and sets than their own tour?
Hat
Because at festivals they still have a challenge to win people over. At their own gigs, people are happy for as long as they play songs.
Jobby
I think they might also see being part of a bigger bill where people aren't necessarily paying just to see them as freeing them up a bit with regards to pleasing casuals 100%. Maybe that festival crowds are more open to having a good time and getting into songs as well, whether they know them or not. It's twisted logic but I guess that'd be Muse for you. Seems mad that so many of us were actually looking forward to the arena tour and naturally expecting it to be even better.

That still means they know they're playing a shitty setlist for their actual fans, and winning over new fans that they will quickly disappoint. I genuinely wonder what could've happened around the Drones tour so that he could no longer maintain that kind of delivery. That's awesome. JimmyP117
I stumbled across a great Bliss today; Paris Olimpia 2012. I don't recall ever seeing it get mentioned here, it's got an excellent falsetto. Loved Matt'a voice from that time. I'd link it but I'm still very much a n00b with such things on a phone. serpentsatellite
The Handler was various levels of shady pretty much the whole time. He just weirdly got better for a very brief period at the end of the first NA tour. iirc, the first part of the US tour and around the French dates were the worst? Some real flat Resistances in there, too.
Hat
what do you guys mean? i didnt follow muse for a while, what happened + examples plz He's either talking about Matt's falsetto which was reeeaaally rough and grating: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO1kURgcf6k&t=40s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO1kURgcf6k&t=1m40s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO1kURgcf6k&t=3m38s Or the ending chest notes, the "Leeet me go, leeet me be" which he couldn't do properly either. 01FromFinland
So, with all that 'his voice broke' talk, any guesses what really happened? Because, to me, the high notes in Showbiz in Reading still were almost, if not absolutely, flawless. Yes, there was some vocal dist thrown in there, but still, if his voice would've been broken, I don't think he would've hit them at all. Plus when I saw them in 2015, they played Micro Cuts, which, again, yes, the chorus was distorted, but he did pull it off.
Hat
The latter half of 2017 was an actual step up for Matt, and I would assume that it was because the breaks between gigs were longer. Showbiz did indeed sound great, but he didn't sound that good in 2016. This is an example of Micro Cuts in 2016: I mean that's a reaaally bad sound for falsetto. Could go into more detail but time for dinner. As for reason: Age, intense touring and probably some vocal problems in 2015 which were never fixed in time for the touring to start. Both Spectrum and I have said that it sounds like he's developed or at least is developing nodules (which doesn't necessarily affect your whole voice btw, which is why some songs can still sound fine), but we'll see. 01FromFinland
This is an example of Micro Cuts in 2016: . Jesus, okay. That's bad. Here's the one I got It's not the best audio quality, but the only one that's on youtube for that gig. Imo, he did pull it off preeeetty well.
