s3ker
The breathing is just ok in my opinion. P.e , I think the breathing in TiRO fits quite well, its realy intense.
dead-duck
meh, I don't know that he'd mind all that much... I don't think I would if I were him. I don't think the opening post was particularly mean spirited. I'm suddenly reminded of that critique thing where they referred to Matt as a "hyperventilating witch" (I tried to find the exact quote but couldn't) Thanks i gonna do that in a minute . Soz ppl I just went to check on back posts and saw your new location on another post before I saw this... awesome
New Born Lee
I never really mind his breathing, I think it goes well with his singing style. Though Map of Your Head is hilarious with it's breaths and gulps.
illuminatus
muscle museum is a good starting point, but makes the song brilliant What a shame that I didn't noticed it, I do love that song immensely well because of the last part I'm listening to some b-sides and Spiral came on, his breathing was intense not that I mind, I actually love it. Even men find his voice orgasmic. He must be doing something right. I agree!! His voice is the epitome of sex. Okay, I'm telling you this because I have on-stage singing experience. Using a microphone by itself is not that easy. You need to keep the microphone at a really close distance, so it catches the sound. Delivering the sound to the noisy audience is not that easy to do, even with amps. And I use a portable microphone. Matt uses a static one, because he plays an instrumet as well. So, he needs to stay close to the mic at all times, so he doesn't longen the distance between, while playing. He can't back off the mic every time he needs to take a breath, and it's hard to not breath energetically, while trying to out-sing a whole audience. So, don't be so critical cuz it's not as easy as it seems. I agree on you there, not that I'm a professional singer, I was once in a church choir. And you really have to take deep breaths just so the audience can hear you properly. Outsing everyone around you but maintaining the vocal range. Portable mic is much harder than what he uses, at least his is a high end mic. I really dont think it is because the microphone that he breathes in so loud, or because he is trying to outsing the audience. If that was the case then why are their tons of bands out there where the lead singer is playing a guitar, but they dont breathe like Matt does. I think it come down to either breathing problems, horrible technique, or he purposely does it becuase he thinks it adds more emotion. Not every singer went to a music school to have a training and there are other bands who breathes closely like Matt only if you listen to it intently. The guy is learning we should be thankful enough that his singing voice improved over the past years. And he has a small vocal chords hence he is having a difficulty to breathe properly. Don't expect Matt to enroll himself in a voice lesson just because some fans doesn't like his breathing technique. That's his signature, you can't take that away from him and from Muse. Don't listen to 'em, Matthew, just keep breathing! Unfortunately, I can't remember... someone posted it here, probably upset because they had insulted Matt... it was one of those sites that puts up snarky things about all sorts of people/bands... Black Absolution
Pg 2: But anyway, on subject, I notice the breathing, and sometimes it's more noticible than others (depending on the song, my mood, how loud i'm listening, whatever), but it never really bothers me. EDIT: btw lol @ the tags guess i scrolled down the page a bit too fast.

Johanna
Guitarplayer: Do you carry a personal grudge towards Matthew? If you do, please keep it out of this forum. You're comments get more and more insulting and depressing, this thread should have never been started. If you really hate Matt so much go slag him off elsewhere. Really, it's not cool to insult him in an official forum. The way he sings should not be changed, it's one of the reasons what makes Muse special and different from the mass. I can't think of any other singer who could control his voice as perfectly as Matt does, who could pull off those high notes and make them a fourth instrument of the band, to add the unique sound to their music with it. Only Matthew Bellamy can pull off a singing voice like this. He uses it with such confidence I've never seen/heard before. Not only would this thread insult Matthew, it insults me deeply as a fan. Why did you feel the need to start this thread? What do you have against him?
Dina F.K.K.
I love Muse's songs, their the most creative songs out there. Everything is fantastic about their songs accept one thing, Matthew Bellamy's breathing in for air. I cant get over how loud and annoying it is. It takes away from the beauty of the song in my opinion. So my question is, why does he do it, and does it annoy you guys? Dont get me wrong, their brilliant in their music accept fo the breathing. Guitar Player p.s Im new here so hi. Hello! Strangely, at the first time I listened to Time is Running Out which was the first muse song I listened to, I didn't realized bout his breathing cos I was focused on their music. I had realized after a friend of mine reminded me about it. But it isn't a problem for me. I love all muse songs whatever Matt's breathing. I think Matt's breathing is long enough, but it's might be just because the technical of the using of the microphone. Sorry if I'm wrong.

Black Absolution
Yes it's true, this breathing is ... sometimes annoying ... especially when you pay attention to that !! and that can be changed when it's not paid attention to. it's his singing style, and i think it's better than most because it doesn't sound like he's rushing through the songs like some artists do. he takes his time, and he breathes which is a lot better than breathing maybe completely after the first verse. dead-duck
guess i scrolled down the page a bit too fast. Ok, fine.... he doesn't have to stop breathing completely, we'll let him take a few breaths every morning at 8AM.
Conxscience
I love the audible breathing! I think it adds a raw-ness to the songs. And you notice, that when you listen to certain songs enough times, you end up picking up the breathing pattern. My friend laughs at me for gasping when singing along ):

goyaaargh
It tends to help you sing along, so you know when to take breaths. It does for me at least.
Guest QueenOfNerds
I think that it also makes it sound like he is really putting everything into each word, like the emotion is more important than the next breath. an overly romantic way of putting it but ya know.... TaperJeanGirl
Dont get me wrong, their brilliant in their music accept fo the breathing. Hmm, the breathing annoys you, yet without it he wouldnt be able to sing and deliver you the brilliant music I have no problem with it. Map Of Your Head is one of my faves simply because of that glorious gulp he does in the middle of it
