illuminatus
I think it was said before that they don't use filter on mic when recording songs especially Matt. It doesn't bother me at all. I really like the way we can hear his breathing on the albums, its close to listening to live bootlegs.
bellamy'szetagirl
I think it makes the music more intimate, more real. They could easily eliminate the breathing sound in the studio, but they choose not to. It adds to the overall experience. It does bother me a lot though when I'm trying to convert a friend to muse... The breathing is responsible for about 70-80% of my failed attempts, and even those who i successfully addict still mention it. I agree with all that. Whether he does it on purpose or not, I don't know. Unfortunately his breathing does turn a lot of people away. That's how it is with my boyfriend. He enjoys making fun of it whenever I make him listen to Muse. That's the only thing about it that gets on my nerves. I have to tell people to just ignore it and listen to how great he sings. But I don't mind it at all personally. Keep breathing, Matthew!
nevermind572
...So my question is, why does he do it , and does it annoy you guys... Haha, for some reason that made me laugh. Generally, I'd say it's because he needs oxygen. I get what you meant though. Anyway, it really doesn't bother me all that much unless I focus on it. I really only think of it if it's pointed out to me (or if it's really prominent). Example, I was in the car w/ my family listening to Showbiz, and my dad commented on the breathing during Muscle Museum, and honestly I had never noticed until he said it. It's just something you can block out if you don't think about it... just focus on the music, not the breathing. Which isn't very hard, since the music's amazingness is enough of a distraction And besides, like some other people said, I think it gives it kind of a more 'real' feeling. guitarplayer
just focus on the music, not the breathing. Which isn't very hard, since the music's amazingness is enough of a distraction For me everything in the song is part of the music, so his beathing is kind of like a annoying instrument going on throughout the song for me. If they eliminate all the breathing, sound and speech deffects, the songs would sound pretty much artificial, no? And when they eventually do a live of the cleaned record song it would sound nothing like it, correct? Little imperfections are all that make things okay sometimes It's artificial in a way, but then everything in the recorded songs is. Muse is awesome live, but their will still be mistakes in the singing aka flat notes or sharp notes, missed beats on the drums, and missed notes on the bass. While on the cd their is none of that. They could find a way to make the breathing not so loud live, so then it wouldn't sound to different from a recorded song without breathing. I do love dead star, just not the breathing, lol
seregon
It really isn't that noticeable when watching them live but when you've heard all of the songs you know them better than your own home it indeed gets a tad annoying, you'd think they would have controlled it better during production. But he only tends to do it when he sings low notes as opposed to high notes Strange man
Johanna
That is the trademark of Muse. Why would you find it annoying? Few singers use the same technique. And another pessimistic thread to slag off one of the members. Oh dear. *head-desk* Nice fans we are .. When will we start a thread to praise the guys? DMHLover
I love Muse's songs, their the most creative songs out there. Everything is fantastic about their songs accept one thing, Matthew Bellamy's breathing in for air. I cant get over how loud and annoying it is. It takes away from the beauty of the song in my opinion. So my question is, why does he do it, and does it annoy you guys? Dont get me wrong, their brilliant in their music accept fo the breathing. Guitar Player p.s Im new here so hi. I guess the most obvious one is in Showbiz. All those are very noticeable. I guess as he goes on they use a higher quality mike and maybe he tries not to breath right in front of the mike

Megglen
May I say, you seem to talking of older songs, not ones from BH&R. Or I can't read. Moving on, Matt does have to breath, for all we know he had pneumonia or another incident with his lungs when he was a kid which makes it so like that! & I don't really get how it's annoying, I mean i get annoyed at Boston Legal for it's zooming-in technique, but I haven't exactly made a thread about it. But that's just my opinion, I'll go now.
InsertCreativeNameHere
Sometimes I notice the breathing and then I find myself subconciuosly concentrating on his breathing and not the music, which is extremely annoying. But 90% of the time I don't notice it.
