U2 holds the attendance record at this venue (55 000) followed by the Rolling Stones (46 000). Coldplay had about 44 000 last year while AC/DC and Madonna have also sold more than 40 000 tickets in Nice.

Really great public number. On a day before, there were lots of tickets to sell. 45k is nice, if we compare with Madonna and Coldplay's numbers.

And what about Germany, Norway and Finland crowds? I believe in 35k in Germany (2 concerts), almost 40k in Norway (2 concerts, and they moved the concert to a smaller stadium in Oslo (5k less) and about 30k in Helsinki.

There's basically no point in comparing anybody to U2's touring at this point. The 360 tour was in a league of it's own. There was a time when the Rolling Stones could compete, but that time has passed. Nothing short of a Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin reunion tour could possibly beat U2 360, and since those guys are old they won't want to do as many shows as U2 did, so it wouldn't work anyway. No rock band will ever be as universally BIG as those I previously mentioned.

Of the more "current" bands, Coldplay are the biggest touring rock band worldwide. Muse is probably 2nd, possibly exceeding them in Europe, but are behind them everywhere else in the world. The Killers momentum seems to have petered out recently, I thought they would be huge too. The Strokes could've had the world too but instead chose to back down from the challenge.

Depeche Mode is another "non-current" band doing great business at the box office touring Europe this summer.

Both Billboard Boxscore and Pollstar report they grossed $61 million and sold 788 000 tickets for 24 shows in May and June from stadiums and arenas in Europe. They are huge in Germany selling out two stadiums in Munich and Berlin and attracted almost 300 000 concertgoers from six dates in that country during the first two months of their tour. They have more than 70 gigs scheduled in Europe including upcoming shows at stadiums in Milan and Rome with a third leg possible in 2014.

Coldplay's MX worldwide tour generated over $180 million in ticket sales while Muse and Depeche Mode are on track to finish their global tours with total grosses somewhere between $120 million and $150 million including festivals.

I use to think this way about tours (tickets price and number of public):

1st division - U2, Rolling Stones, Madonna (being the only female-single-artist to sell out stadiums), Roger Waters (The Wall) - they have the highest ticket prices and can sell 100% or almost, of tickets in all continents.

2nd - Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Robbie Williams, Metallica, Celine Dion - Cheapest ticket prices, great tickets sales, but moderated success in some parts of the globe.

3rd - Muse, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Rihanna - great tickets sales in Europe (not all countries), Asia and Oceania. Good sales in USA and Canada, great in Mexico and some other countries.

Attendance numbers for Finland (based on unconfirmed yet reliable sources):

Olympic Stadium, July 27: 26 000 (A tabloid mentioned that the promoters are expecting 25 000 the day before the show, the main newspaper in the country mentioned a number of 26 000 in their concert review the next day. The day was warm&sunny which would explain the number of last-minute tickets sold).

Hartwall Arena on December 2012: 12 000 (the show was (practically) sold out, I've sometimes seen 13 000 mentioned as the concert capacity, however 12 000 is the number the arena website quotes as the capacity for concerts, depending on the stage set up etc: Muse has a big stage set up so I'd imagine it's closer to 12 000 than 13 000, but this is speculation)

EDIT: Resistance tour: summer 2011 outdoors concert is widely quoted as having an attendance of 21 000, the arena concert of 2010 was in the same arena&sold out as last December's gig so 12 000.

From Billboard magazine issue date 10 August 2013:

"English band Muse also breaks the $10 million barrier this week, taking the No. 2 Boxscore ranking with $12.3 million (€9,301,645) in box-office revenue from two sellouts in Paris. The concerts were part of the band's Unsustainable tour that played stadiums in European markets from late May through the end of July. Paris stadium Stade de France hosted more than 150,000 fans for shows on June 21 and 22. Earlier in the year, Muse was playing arenas in the United States and Canada during a three-month trek. From 23 venues on the North American leg in the spring, 28 concerts were reported with revenue totaling $15.7 million from 279,000 tickets."

This means box office figures from 8 venues on the North American leg have not yet been reported to Billboard. The average ticket price for this first N.A. leg was $56.27.

Muse, Cage the Elephant

Arena at Gwinnett Center Duluth, Ga. Sept. 4, 2013

$394,876 6,749 / 9,500 1 / 0

$59.50, $49.50 Frank Productions/C3 Presents

Muse, Cage the Elephant

Bridgestone Arena Nashville, Tenn. Sept. 6, 2013

$426,820 7,010 / 8,463 1 / 0

$65, $50 NS2

Pretty consistent with other secondary US markets. But what do you do? In most cities there are theater venues that hold like 2 - 4,000 people, and then the next biggest thing is an arena that holds like 15,000+ people. They're too big for small venues, but not big enough for arenas. Might as well play for as many people as you can. It is a bit sobering to go to an arena show and see 2/3 of the arena is empty, though.

According to yonder: http://www.pollstarpro.com/files/charts2013/2013MidYearTop100WorldwideTours.pdf - Muse had the 30th highest grossing tour of the year up until June this year, making US$25.1M.

Pollstar's mid-year estimate was off by around US$45M. The publication's year-end worldwide tour chart will be released in late December and should show Muse earning US$102M+ for 79 shows in Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia. The band's Fall 2012 Europe leg of 25 arena gigs generated revenue of about US$23M bringing the total T2L tour gross to US$125M-plus.

Billboard also prepares a year-end chart covering boxcores reported to the trade publication from mid-November 2012 through mid-November 2013. So far tour grosses from about 39 Muse shows have been reported to Billboard. For example, the sold out Stade de France shows in June have been reported but none of the other stadium gigs in Europe this summer. In reality, T2L should rank in the Top 10 highest grossing tours of 2013 but not according to Billboard. We will have to wait to see what happens.
