2013 Billboard Boxscores

The just reported box office numbers from the Boston gig (12,000) were good while Uncasville (5,000) underperformed somewhat probably because of the close proximity of the two venues and concert dates.

Estimated paid attendance for the unreported and upcoming shows in the US & Canada for the 2013 T2L tour:

9,000 San Diego

10,000 Seattle

6,000 Cleveland

10,000 Detroit

9,000 Las Vegas

28,000 New York City (two shows at MSG)

10,000 East Rutherford, NJ

6,500 Charlotte

9,000 Atlanta

6,500 Nashville

6,000 Pittsburgh

11,000 Philadelphia

14,000 Washington DC

9,000 Denver

9,000 Salt Lake City

7,500 Edmonton

6,500 Calgary

8,500 Vancouver

26,000 Toronto (two shows)

24,000 Montreal (two shows)

10,000 Quebec City

Total projected grosses for 44 shows: US$24 million

Total projected attendance: 412,000

Average ticket price: US$58

According to a review of the Cleveland show, 9,000 people were in attendance. Judging from videos some of the upper decks were used, whereas in Columbus and Cincy the entire upper level was curtained off.

MSG shows will probably be a little more than 14K per night, considering that the seats behind the stage were all sold.

seats behind the stage were NOT entirely sold for MSG.

Night 1 they filled maybe 2 or 3 rows behind the stage.

Night 2 they were curtained off.

I know for a fact Muse had at least 11,300 tickets sold for Seattle. I saw the sheet that had the stats on it. There was also a + next to it (probably just in case more tickets had been sold since the paper was printed). Vancouver looks about right. There were pretty big empty spots there. Seattle was jam packed up to the rafters. :)

Do you think that European gigs will be reported to Billboard?

My recollection is that none of the 2010 TR stadium gigs were reported to Boxscore so I am assuming the same will hold true for the T2L tour. Pollstar made estimates for Muse in their annual list of top worldwide tours but that publication apparently does not release concert grosses for specific gigs or shows at either stadiums or arenas for any artist.

My estimated attendance numbers for the 2013 TR stadium gigs by country follow below which I will revise based on media and fan reports of how filled the venues were:

UK: 150 000 for four gigs

France: 180 000 for three gigs

Italy: 100 000 for three gigs

Spain: 40 000 for one gig

Portugal: 30 000 for one gig

Netherlands: 30 000 for one gig

Belgium: 25 000 for one gig

Germany: 20 000 for two gigs

Switzerland: 25 000 for one gig

Norway: 30 000 for two gigs

Finland: 20 000 for one gig

650 000 x USD 70 (avg ticket price) = USD 45 million gross (est) for 20 gigs

The average ticket price for Coldplay's stadium gigs in 2012 was probably closer to $90.

Avg. attendance for Muse's stadium gigs in 2013 will be around 38 000 compared with close to 50 000 for the band's stadium gigs in 2010. The average gross per show in 2013 will be $3 million vs. $4 million for the comparable gigs three years ago. Average gig attendance for the current T2L tour has been trending slightly downwards in the USA and Canada. Houston and Dallas however did report higher attendance for this tour compared with the tickets sold for TR.

Since Billboard Boxscore and Pollstar report all worldwide concert tour grosses in USD, all numbers used in this thread use dollars even though most of the gigs take place outside the USA. I am not aware of any European based trade publication that reports global concert tour grosses for artists.

Updated estimated concert tour grosses for the Muse 2013 shows in North America:

$19 million - 335 000 tickets sold for 36 shows in 33 cities in the USA

$4.5 million - 80 000 tickets sold for 8 shows in 6 cities in Canada

France: 190 000 for three gigs

Italy: 130 000 for three gigs

Portugal: 45 000 for one gig

Netherlands: 35 000 for one gig

Belgium: 35 000 for one gig

Germany: 30 000 for two gigs

Switzerland: 45 000 for one gig

Norway: 30 000 for two gigs

Finland: 25 000 for one gig

770 000 x USD 80 (avg ticket price) = $62 million gross (est) for 20 summer mostly stadium gigs in 2013

510 000 x USD 75 (avg ticket price) = $38 million gross (est) for 10 summer mostly stadium gigs in 2010 (not including festivals)

UK: 240 000 for three gigs vs 160 000 four gigs

Italy: 60 000 for one gig vs 120 000 for three gigs

The UK estimate for TR is likely too high. Use caution when the press says gigs are "sold out."

The two Wembley stadium gigs in June 2007 reportedly sold 134 200 tickets and grossed $9.9 million or just under 7m GBP. In addition, the three shows at Wembley Arena earlier in the same tour sold another 30 000+.

The two Wembley stadium gigs in September 2010 likely attracted a similar or slightly smaller audience (120 000 to 130 000) with perhaps 50 000 to 55 000 spectators at the Manchester gig that same month. The two earlier TR shows at O2 Arena also had over 38 000 fans in attendance while the comparable two shows at the same venue in October 2012 reported 34 000 tickets sold.

A sold out gig at the Stade de France usually means 73 000 to 78 000 in attendance for most acts with the exception of U2 which set a box office record of over 90 000 at each of their three gigs at that venue during their 360 tour.

The Milano San Siro gig attendance figure in 2010 is probably in the range of 60 000 to 70 000 so your estimate is close. By comparison, Bruce Springsteen sold 57 000 tickets at that same venue on his recent European tour.

Ok, let's be fair... they didnt promote really well the 2nd Law era. The Resistance's promotion was bigger and way better.

They would sell out better if Coventry's date didnt exist (or move it to Dublin's Phoenix Park in Ireland... I think they would sell 30-35k there); if they play Arnhem's Gelredome instead Amsterdam Arena, and play Werchter on a date far from Netherland's date. Nice and Torino dates are too close, as the cities are too. So, they wont sell out Nice's date, I think (they could play Marseille's Stade Velodrome... probably would sell better than Nice sales).

Barcelona's date (arena) on the first european leg, and Madrid's in a stadium on this leg would sell better. Or what about to play in San Sebastian (they always receive big concerts there and Muse aren't used to play there)...

I would like to see all the concerts sold out.

I'm happy they'll play 85.000 at Rock in Rio this year. And I believe that 80%+ will be there just to see them. :D
