Here's a web feature/interview with Chris, done before the Madrid concert.

Muse: "If you want the band to last, you must get rid of the excesses"

Muse is going through their best times in some of the worst times (economically speaking). What kind of laws of physics did you have to break in order for this to happen?

We are privileged. The economic crisis is still very hard on many people, and sometimes you feel guilty for being in such a stable position. Although in this profession you never know where you'll be tomorrow, our work is much better paid than most people think. At first we risked a lot choosing such a complicated job, but it went well. Today we are paid pretty handsomely.

The 2nd Law combines progressive rock with Led Zeppelin riffs, synth pop, dance, dubstep, nods to Queen ...?

The album is more experimental and perhaps most commercial we've done to date. For us, it was exciting. After more than 18 years, we love to try new things.

What do thermodynamics have to do with this? Is the album chaotic or balanced?

The nature of our music has always been about the chaos, but in this latest album that chaos is more present than ever. Many of the songs do not seem to belong to the same album. It starts in one place and then jumps to a completely different one, and so on until the end. Not too much balance.

Some critics say that the album is too bombastic and that it contains too many concepts all at once. At this point, do the reviews sting less, or more?

Time makes you more indifferent but in this case, I've written and sang two songs on the album, and that makes me more sensitive. When you're mostly playing an instrument, the comments do not affect you much. After releasing The 2nd Law I read that someone said he did not like my voice and ... that hurt me a bit. Then I realized I had to cope with the negative reviews and it is impossible to please everyone. Even groups like U2 or The Beatles have had bad reviews! In all these years Muse has received judgments of all kinds. Generally, people either hate us or love us, no middle ground. And I think that's good because it means that your music causes a powerful reaction.

Have things between you and Matt changed since you stole the microphone and took center stage for two songs?

(Laughs) It really was him who encouraged me to sing. Matt gave me some tips, recommended me to rewrite some parts and when we finished ... it was decided that it would be the best for me to sing, as that opens some interesting doors in the future.

In Liquid State, you sing that you need to be rescued (???methinks they messed it up with Save Me.) Did you have moments of doubts and difficulty?

Yes, I did. I find it slightly strange to sing it now, I wrote it a few years ago when I was in a very difficult situation. I was going through a dark period, I was unhealthy ... I was physically and emotionally depressed. Now I've sorted out my life, I'm married, I have children and I feel that those days are long gone. Maybe these songs can help others who are going through the same things I went through.

There are many stories of Muse partying with groupies and doing crazy things on the tour bus in the early days. Did your wife not worry every time you went on tour?

I must make it clear that I never was on that bus, I always was on another one. The truth is I took no part in those stories. Seriously!

You and Matthew are now parents. You, in particular, have six kids. Is your rock star life now different?

Spending time with the family is complicated, especially if you have to spend long periods away from home. Music is a very important part in my life, but not as important as my family. As we are becoming older we've realized we can't be on tour all the time. At first we did and we would only stop the touring to get in the studio, but there comes a point where you have to scale the excesses down if you want the band the last. Now we spend 3 weeks on the road, and then we have a 10-day break. It's a rule.

Aww at Chris's reaction to someone not liking his voice. :( I'm a dead softie really.

Not that it matters at all, but he's making it sound like the issues he sang about happened years and years ago before he was married and had kids, but I can understand him not wanting to talk about it explicitly.

The original article is in Spanish, so what Chris said was translated to Spanish for the article and then to English again.

He did say he was very violent as a pre-teen/teenager.

:supersad:

Chris has a lovely voice. That guy doesn't know what he's talking about. And I'm not just saying that as a biased fangirl. :phu:

Thanks for posting this interview. It was a nice read.

Aw, that's sad. I figured he'd be curious about fan opinions, how could he not? Hopefully he read a lot of positive ones as well. I do think his voice is lovely. Such a nice tone on Save Me.

Really? Hm, curious. I wonder what he thinks makes this album more commercial than The Resistance.
Maybe because it has a ton more songs that could go on the radio, while TR was mostly classical influenced?

Thanks for the link, it was an excellent interview :)
