RobTheMoose
I was watching the iTunes festival broadcast Sunday and I noticed Matt's guitar tone sounded different from normal for the intro of SMBH. What kind of effect would produce the weird synth sound heard on this video from 30:45 (especially at 30:57)?
Don'tPostThePear
my guess would be a glitchy octave down with slow tracking resulting in those portamento/pitch glide and artifact like stuff it is pretty cool imo
muse59200
maybe mxr blue box ?
Will_
Apparently he now has a DT, maybe that combined with something else?
RobTheMoose
my guess would be a glitchy octave down with slow tracking resulting in those portamento/pitch glide and artifact like stuff it is pretty cool imo Definitely, I think it's a nice change, adds something to the song maybe mxr blue box ? I was thinking that at first, but it's almost like a synth with the unstableness of a Fuzz Factory Apparently he now has a DT, maybe that combined with something else? He's definitely changed something in his rig, that tone was effing thick!
Dominic.
Someone said he uses an Axe FX now? Is that replacing all his TR tour amps?

Dave.
Someone said he uses an Axe FX now? Is that replacing all his TR tour amps? Looks like it. Although that could just be for the promo gigs and early shows. We'll find out soon anyway.
kueller
Does he use the AxeFX for gigs? I thought he just mentioned it for studio purposes.
james90
yeah, he has one in his rack. apparently he's using the diezel simulator.
Phill
listening to SMBH now and I'm pretty sure it's the Blue Box
matthijs
yeah, he has one in his rack. apparently he's using the diezel simulator. Wow I can't believe he's gone for the amp sims rather than the real amps Even though they're really good it seems... odd.
Phill
It's not like anyone listening can notice or even cares really though. I bet his guitar tech and the stage crew are happy!
matthijs
Yeh, should make the switching and size of rack more manageable.

To be honest these days amp sims are rather good. For recording yeah you might still want to use amps but for live performances you won't notice any real difference once is mixed with drums, bass etc. Only people who will are people who know he uses an amp sim. And even then i have my doubts on whether they can truly hear the difference or whether they are hearing what they want to hear
StandYourGround
Looks like the amp sims are coming from the kemper profiling amps. He has two, a white one and a black one. The axe fx is probably only for effects. Wonder why he has two kempers. Stereo? Multi-amp sim layering?
james90
I'm pretty sure someone said he was using the diezel simulator on the axe FX no idea why he has two kempers. I'm guessing it's pretty unlikely for them to blow up

Must be what he's using, especially since he has two. Unless he's modeling using all of them! Which I think I'm right in saying, with the switchblade, he could do. StandYourGround
He doesnt normally contain it in the same rack though and nothing else is doubled up. Must be for stereo stuff/multiple amp models. He's definitely doing a lot more stereo stuff now anyway. Lots of panning stuff going on

And even then i have my doubts on whether they can truly hear the difference or whether they are hearing what they want to hear I've always believed that the end result, what we hear coming out of that PA, is more important than what is happening in behind the scenes. I presume he will likely all ways use actual amps for the studio recording process. yeah, he has one in his rack. apparently he's using the diezel simulator. I saw that earlier and I thought at first "where is amp rack", it certainly seems more straight forward.
