Nothing new, really (in fact, some of the things he says are identical to what other magazines have said). It's in Portuguese, so Google translate will help you.

The most interesting thing is that Chris' voice apparently sounds like Dave Grohl :stunned:.

"Nós estivemos lá três vezes, mas fizemos somente cinco concertos. É um país muito bonito. Na primeira vez que fomos ao Rio fizemos muita festa". "Quando acompanhamos o U2 na América do Sul tivemos um período tranquilo, jogando golfe."

Translation:

"We've been to Brazil 3 times but only played 5 shows. It's a beautiful country. First time we went to Rio we partied a lot. When we supported U2 in South America we wanted to take it easy, playing golf.

------

Obviously Chris can't count.

hahaha yeah, I saw that. Give him a break, it's not like he's gonna vividly remember everything in his life :p

Especially when it comes down to touring... I know I wouldn't remember a lot

Not surprised at the Dave Grohl reference... He sounded a bit like him when he was singing Hyper Music at reading.

Obviously I was just taking the piss but it's not like they tour the south side of the american continent like they tour europe or america, haha.

Finally did feed it to Google translate - the result is pretty horrible, but I think at some point Chris says something interesting:

On the fall of the popularity of rock on the charts, Chris says: "I think it started when we launched our first album. Not unheard of. Some say that music with guitar is dying, but when you look at what are the biggest bands in the world, all are rock! Many pop artists sell loads of albums, but do not fill stadiums.

Knowing that the money is made on tours, not on albums, this would mean actually rock bands are doing better than pop artists. Dunno whether that's true.

Michael Jackson (rip), Madona, Lady Gaga (who sold out a stadium concert in 10 minutes), George Michael, Beyonce, Robbie Williams, Duran Duran etc. all of them sell/sold out stadiums. That argument is kind of invalid.

Definitely. They're all established pop acts and when some of them are in the charts, they will finish highly (Gaga, Beyonce etc.), and are easily capable of selling out large venues. They will also shift millions of albums, but look at the UK charts now: acts like Wiley, Taio Cruz, Labrinth and other similar acts: they are all capable of gathering no.1 singles quite easily, but do they have a long term future? Depends, but I doubt it. Will they sell out stadiums? Definitely not. Some people will think that achieving no.1 singles breeds success for the rest of their lives, but it doesn't. Looking at the Uk Top 40 I'd say that a large amount of the artists in it will not be popular in 5 years. Sadly there is too much emphasis put on chart positions these days.

But I digress.

The anticipation for T2L is killing me and it looks like another interview will have to keep me going.

Chart positions have always been important. If anything, I'd say they're less important now than they have been in the past.

Yeah I agree, for example the Britpop battle between Oasis and Blur was all about gaining that no.1 spot. It is still important to the bigwigs of the music industry and all the companies, and to some artists, but it used to be everything that an artist dreamed of. Nowadays not so much.

I think the reason chart positions are seen as less important nowadays is that the sales are so small, and mostly (I'm not sure this is true now with downloads, or even with singles generally) but they have been seen to be the haunt of children, not serious music buyers who tend to prefer buying albums.

There doesn't seem to have been any strategy employed to get Madness up the charts at all. Tiny amount of promotion, no build up, no video yet. Perhaps the video for Madness will be released closer to the album release. It seems that the purpose of the release of Madness is only to draw attention to the album from perhaps a different demographic.

Saying that, I bet Matt would have been chuffed if Madness had stormed the singles charts being as he (strangely) apparently thinks it is the best song he has ever written.

As much as I like Madness, I still can't get my head around why Matt thinks it's the best song he's ever written. Previously he thought it was Knights of Cydonia. I'm sorry but in my opinion Madness doesn't hold a candle to Knights of Cydonia.

Maybe it's the personal nature of Madness. I agree with you completely though.
