radioseb
Hi, I'm new here, though I've been a passive observer for a while now I've trawled through loads of tab both on here and elsewhere and some of it is pretty good and comprehensive. However when listening to Muse live there's always parts of the songs, sometimes even just 'squeals' which Matt makes which sound awesome and really add to the song - which are not on tab sites. Sometimes they're only ever played once on a particular rendition of the song. There's too many examples to choose from, so I thought if anyone has figured out any, from any songs, for themselves - if they'd like to share!? I know a lot of it is effects, settings and technique etc. The difficulty I have is I can't play by ear, so if anyone's figured out 'one off' little licks and riffs I'd be interested to hear Cheers, Seb

The squeal, if I'm understanding you correctly, is from the Sustainer in most of Matt's Mansons. Oh, and the usual term for the sort of riffs and licks he likes to play is "wankery"
james90
I think you're referring to the harmonic squeals from his fernandes sustainer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSq_Inr_0AI like at 2:15? I tabbed out the part at 6:10 also: E B G--2b--p0--h2--p0--h2--2s8--7--7--h8--7--5--4--4--h5----------4------------ D--------------------------------------------------------------7--7-------7--5--5 A D b = bend p = pull off h = hammer on s = slide

Ah so its his sustainer.
Aerotec
Is his sustainer switched on during the main riff ? Because I think it may create undesired noises when he plays.I have never played with a sustainer though. However I can't believe that he switches the sustainer on and off for a one second squeal... james90
i think he switches it on after the piano intro, and off at the beginning of the verse.

Before someone mentioned the sustainer I thought it was some kinda harmonic or something. I guessing there's no way to make it without one? Yeah I've always wondered this as I don't have a sustainer to try it out with. I imagined he had it on or the whole riff but just wondered why it didn't have any effect for the most part. Is it just when he bends the string that it 'triggers' the harmonic quicker?

I was in GAK the other day in Brighton and asked if they had the new Whammy 5 in stock to try out and to my delight they said they had so I went down to the bottom floor in the ORANGE room with a Fender Jazz awaiting the Whammy in all it's glory They bought in the DT, n00bs. The DT was still cool though
