Xvm27 Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 The only similarities I've seen is in Radiohead's song "My Iron Lung" where the guitar kinda sounds like the guitar in Hyper Music and the lyric "Faith, you're driving me away" is a lot like "Faith, it drives me away" in Glorious. I'm not too familiar with all of Radiohead's work, but I'm just wondering if I'm missing something.
underrugswept Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 As someone who's heard the full catalogue of both bands, I can assure you, they don't. The only similarity I've seen is the whiny voice. I think one time someone who didn't know what he/she was talking about said they sounded like Radiohead, and then it just got endlessly repeated by people who also didn't know what they were talking about. They're both excellent bands, but not similar at all.

Hat Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 It's because Bellamy was Thoms guitar tech back in the day. That's actually what made Bellamy start a band.
Morgan. Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 It's because Bellamy was Thoms guitar tech back in the day. That's actually what made Bellamy start a band. I have a feeling if that were actually true, Bellamy would still be his guitar tech.

Dave. Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 If you listen to showbiz its far more radiohead influenced then afterwards. Muse really held back as they taught their progressive songs wouldn't be successful so they did a brit-rock album so they did have a bit of radiohead sound but from their on the two have been very different

Niall Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Ah, it's been a long time, Muse vs Radiohead. I actually heard Plug in Baby and Anyone Can Play Guitar back to back in a club last night.
Hat Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 DITTO! But here's to hoping that Muse doesn't pull a "Radiohead" on their next album and give us an hours-worth of pretentious elevator music. Nonsense. half an hour is more like it.
haze015 Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Muse play all the songs Radiohead are too embarrassed to put their name to. It's really Thom Yorke all along. If you listen to showbiz its far more radiohead influenced then afterwards. Muse really held back as they taught their progressive songs wouldn't be successful so they did a brit-rock album so they did have a bit of radiohead sound but from their on the two have been very different Go buy Grace by Jeff Buckley, then listen to The Bends and Showbiz. Also, Muse hadn't written any "progressive" songs at that point.
kueller Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 A lot of the older stuff has a Radiohead sound. Afterwards there are a few similarities, like HCM, but by Absolution they were going in very different directions. I never got how they would sound nothing alike though
Bewilders Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Thom Yorke has a wonky eye and Matt Bellamy has a wonky nose.
Hat Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Thom Yorke has a wonky eye and Matt Bellamy has a wonky sense of logic. Corrected.
Furygirl Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Thom Yorke has a wonky eye and Matt Bellamy has a wonky nose. LOL! I've said this exact same thing! Musically, I've never really understood it.
Levus Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Only song to sound ANYTHING like Radiohead IMO was the outro to Cave. You just can't compare Muse to Radiohead these days, doesn't stop people from trying though. I saw a review that compared Undisclosed Desires to Idioteque, might have been the Rolling Stone review that said that Matt Bellamy can't get over his obsession with Thom Yorke.
Seaking Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Go buy Grace by Jeff Buckley Pfff, what generation is this ....
jdeboer01 Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Pfff, what generation is this .... Hey! Bite your tounge!
Dave. Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Go buy Grace by Jeff Buckley, then listen to The Bends and Showbiz. Also, Muse hadn't written any "progressive" songs at that point. I've been meaning to get grace anyway. Matt said in an interview that they had 60 songs written for showbiz but felt some of it was too progressive so they chose the less progressive songs.

Dave. Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 They consider BH&R progressive though. Progressive for them at the time anyway.
Hat Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Progressive for them at the time anyway. And progressive for Muse at the time of Showbiz would be? A song that wasn't about teenage angst?
kueller Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 And progressive for Muse at the time of Showbiz would be? A song that wasn't about teenage angst? At the time, yes. You just can't compare Muse to Radiohead these days, doesn't stop people from trying though. I've seen so many stupid comparisons done by some of Radiohead's fanbase.
