IntelligentAl
So a while ago we had the 'list your favourite guitarist' thread, but I'm interested to hear who might appear on your list if you put personal preference aside. I want to hear the top 10 guitarists that you think came along and did somthing brand new that hadnt been done before. Somebody that was entirely unique and influenced the way guitars were played in a major way. So for example, the way The Edge used effects, or the way Hendrix turned rock n roll on its head. Try limit it to 10 people and post your list. Things might get controversial. Robert Johnson Les Paul Chuck Berry George Harrison Jimi Hendrix Brian May The Edge Johnny Marr Tom Morello Jack White
james90
I can't even come up with 10, but Jimi Hendrix Eddie Van Halen The Edge Tom Morello Phil X Jack White I can think of some other unique guitarists, but I'm not sure if they'd really count. Will_
Jimi Josh Homme (style of play) The Edge Morello Jack White Bells for the inbuilt effects Van Halen I think George Harrison was perhaps less unique but certainly *some* of the stuff he played was different in the day That's all I can get... I would say Phil X too but I haven't heard much of him apart from the Youtube vids...

james90
I would say Phil X too but I haven't heard much of him apart from the Youtube vids... I'd check out some stuff by the drills, but he doesn't really go off in any of the songs like he does in the live recordings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAUvyNALfj0 And also, Josh Homme was one of the others I was thinking of - but I don't know if he's really done anything mind blowing like some of the others have. He just has a really unique playing style and overall sound which I like a lot.

IntelligentAl
Interesting that a lot of you are saying Phil X, I think I'd agree to an extent. But for those of you saying Bellamy because he uses in built effects... I was pretty much expecting everyone to say Bellamy, but as great as he is, Im not really sure hes done anything that revolutionary just yet. Not in the same way as the likes of Les Paul, The Edge or Morello.

Lord MFC
Herman Li Trololololol Edit: I think Buckley was more of a revolutionary to the vocal evolution, not so much guitar. Also, Willie Johnson should be on everyone's list. First person to ever distort a guitar and then copied by Chuck berry to make it popular. I was pretty much expecting everyone to say Bellamy, but as great as he is, Im not really sure hes done anything that revolutionary just yet. Not in the same way as the likes of Les Paul, The Edge or Morello. Disagree. The Les Paul Recording Model didn't have inbuilt effects in the same way Bells' guitars do. In fact, it didn't have any true "effects" built in at all, it's all things like phase switching, pickup modification and selection, coil taps, etc. I think Bellamy is revolutionary in his own way...even, dare I say, moreso than the Firebird X *flame suit on* Herman Li /thread
IntelligentAl
What you fail to realise is that Les Paul actually had a Fuzz Factory in there too. So he could Plug In Baby and shit.

Guest Batman.
I think we're all forgetting about all the fucking mental soviet russian guitars on the inbuilt effects front. [HIDDEN=Awesomeness] [/HIDDEN] On the influential guitarists, I'd say I haven't been alive long enough to gain the experience to formulate a list of the 10 most influential guitarists, but I'm going to be far out and hipster and say B3llz0r. Not just for the inbuilt effects either, I like his playing. /flameshield Although, there's a really amazing guitarist that I can't remember the name of, he uses two handed tapping to get bass notes from the lower strings and plays a melody with the higher strings. I think he might use midi and stuff to get different effect for each string too. It's some pretty far out shit.
