The true meaning behind the Lyrics?

Recently I have been listening to songs from all of the Albums and have noticed that although many of the songs appear to be about emotion (as I suppose we should expect from any band) :p, many of them have other references. For example who are 'they' who Mat B refers to in Knights of Cydonia and what to make of lyrics that say 'don't waste my time or I will waste you'.

This appears to be a stab at something higher. Government for example so what do you guys think. Are Muse having a shot at governments or is it something else and if so why?

The lyrics comes to Matt in his dreams. He has had them since he was a kid, but no one could explain why.

By this I assume you mean he dreams of a situation and then bases his lyrics on that dream? i.e. he doesn't actually think of the lyrics while dreaming

That's what I do anyway... :$

No, the lyrics just appears in his mind, and then he writes them down when he wakes up. But obviously, it won't always be 100% in order, which is why the New Born lyrics changed during the first year it was played.

Ah ok. Do many artists do it like that? Seems a bit odd to me.

It's not very common. Like I said, no one can say why it happens, and why it only happens to some. It's a popular theory that it's some sort of paranormal thing. People are stupid.

By this am I right to assume you are saying people having paranormal dreams are stupid?

Still it's interesting if he dreams the lyrics. It's just that the messages behind them are so similar to accounts of dreams I have heard others having, especially re parallel universes and super massive black holes. On a more personal note I have had dreams about something controlling us and giving an agenda to people in power. Maybe I am crazy after all  but it is interesting that these ideas can be found in songs like Assasin.

I wonder how the text appears to him - does he hear the lyrics, does someone tell him them or does he see them written down.

This IS a real thing that is happening, if Matt and you (the OP) had dreams about it without really knowing about it, that's pretty damn awesome!! I thought like half Muse's lyrics reflected this? The government/elite that run this world, the New World Order puppet masters. are mind fucking us, controlling us. This is one of the reasons I love Muse because clearly Matt is one of the enlightened ones.

Edit:

Just nabbed this quote from Matt from another thread that seemed a perfect response to this:

“Everywhere we go, we seem to bump into some kind of extremist,” [...] “Then there are the hard-line underground, we’re-gonna-take-down-the-government type people who come backstage and say things like, ‘You’re on our side, aren’t you?’ I’m not so sure what that says about me or the music we make, but sometimes we do express some more obscure points of view that question the reality we live in.”

This quote kinda confuses me. At first he sounds like he's mocking conspiracy theorists but then he admits questioning our reality is a good thing. I find it hard to believe he doesn't know more than what he appears to know.

He just don't want to be consired as an extremist. He does question things, but he don't want to be a "we're-gonna-take-down-the-government type" of person (wich he really isn't, is he?)

Matt's said before that conspiracy theories just interest him, he doesn't actually believe them much, if at all. So when people claim that he's all clued in and a revolutionary against the government and start talking about all that Illuminati bullshit, it sounds very silly.
