40 of the Greatest Bassists of All Time--Picked by NME Readers

15 OF 40

Chris Wolstenhole You said: “A dynamic bass player who can play dirty gritty fast basslines or a more traditional style!” – Ronan Sterry We say: From album to album, Chris has switched up his instruments and his style, using all manner of distortions. He's to thank for bringing a heavier rock sound to the band pinned down by his muscular bass-playing.

Guy makes a couple of short tweets once every 4 months or so, and someone writes an article on it. :chuckle:

And if the next album sounds like Back in Black, I might actually cry.

Me too, but you know matt, he can say a lot of stupid things. It might also be a pop/country/funky album

The 7th Studio album by the British rock band Muse is to be released in July 2015. Work on the album began earlier this year in May, and details have now emerged as to the album style.

There is good news, and (possible) bad news for fans of the band. Firstly, there will be 15 tracks on the album - which is a step up from the previous few albums. The bad news is that it is AGAIN another "concept" album.

The album will actually be just a single song. Yes, you read that right, there is 1 song on the entire album, but it is split into 15 chapters (hence the 15 tracks). The entire album will clock in at 68 Minutes and 31 Seconds. That is an incredible length for an album.

When lead singer Matt Bellamy gave details on the album, he had this to say:

"[We] love to come up with new material all the time, and pride ourselves on what we create. This album is our best work yet, and although the idea of the album has been done in some way by other musicians, we are the first in the modern era of music to produce this. The entire album is about the evolution of mankind, dating from the early dwellers, right up to the modern day. Most of the album is digital programming, but naturally, there is elements of instruments in every chapter. Each chapter flows into the next seamlessly, as if it literally is one single song."

A music video will be made for the album, but it will be a "short film", which will be released on the same day as the album in 2015.

The official track listing and length for the album is as follows:

[4:13] Chapter I: Dawn

[5:02] Chapter II: Absolute Zero

[3:52] Chapter III: Fire

[4:14] Chapter IV: Average Life

[3:22] Chapter V: Heart-breaker

[5:14] Chapter VI: Blackness

[3:32] Chapter VII: 8 Kings

[5:55] Chapter VIII: Victoria

[6:16] Chapter IX: Take To The Skies

[3:14] Chapter X: The War To Forget

[3:19] Chapter XI: Twofold

[4:44] Chapter XII: The Split

[3:45] Chapter XIII: Disco At The Heart

[4:17] Chapter XIV: Digital Death

[7:31] Chapter XV: Dusk

[68:31] Total Length

We can't help but bring in a comparison to Green Day and American Idiot. The story of St. Jimmy was a tale to keep close to the heart, but for us, it seems like Muse are just bored.

"The song 'Clocks" is for our old friend Matt Bellamy, one of the greatest singers in the world" - Chris Martin who sang a snippet of 'Madness' during the performance at last week's private KROQ/Beats Music gig in Los Angeles and also dedicated 'Viva la Vida' to our young friend Harry Styles who was also in the audience after 1D played three shows at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena for over 165,000 fans.

So could a lot of things.

Gawd, pedantry is a fucking bore .

How is it pedantry  you just said "won't happen", which implied you were sure about something you can't be sure about.

The talent booking agent for Muse, Marsha Vlasic, exits ICM. Muse and Metallica now share the same management (Q Prime) and agency (AGI).

Matt is one of the musicians interviewed for the new book on rock trio Primus. Muse played a riff from 'DMV' at the Oakland, CA gig attended by Les Claypool in early 2013.

British rock duo Royal Blood, whose sound is influenced by early Muse, had their Mercury Prize nominated first album bow at #1 on the UK album chart with 66,000 copies sold in its debut week according to the Official Charts Company.

Before/after shots from Leeds 2011

Muse stood in the mud in the freezing cold backstage gazebo to do this for us. Their management were annoyed, but the band didn’t care - despite it ruining Matt’s new sparkly pumps. That’s love. They’d just done a two hour, headline set at Leeds Festival and hardly had a hair out of place afterwards. Only the towel suggests it’s even an after shot. Like - what would make them actually sweat?
