Muse albums and planets

Hello all,

I was listening to Muse recently and I thought about a possible link each album could have with planets in our respective solar system (obviously Black Holes and Revelations was the primary influence for this). I'm not saying it was intended or that you have to see the pattern too, it's just something my brain saw and went, "Hey look, there's something here." I think Muse albums might correspond to planets in our solar system (in ascending order of distance from the sun). Hear me out.

Showbiz corresponds to the planet Mercury and the cover features a women dressed in silver stepping into a silver pool (ever seen a pool of mercury?). The first track is Sunburn. Mercury was once believed to be both the gods Apollo (the god of music) and Hermes (messenger of the gods). Hermes was also the god of commerce and the album deals with success (Muscle Museum).

Origin of Symmetry corresponds to the planet Venus and the cover features a distinct orange hue similar to many images of the planet. Venus is the god of love and fertility, a theme that concerns the albums fear that technology is destroying and replacing humanity (New Born, Plug in Baby). New Born in particular deals with themes of artificial reproduction.

Absolution corresponds to the planet Earth and deals with an apocalypse bringing an end to our history on the planet. The cover depicts a man, clad in a protective suit, watching as others are ascended to heaven. The entire album's about the end of the world with religious undertones all over the place.

Black Holes and Revelations is kind of easy, so I'll just leave it blank unless people want more in here.

The Resistance corresponds to the planet Jupiter and the cover features a large kaleidoscope surrounding the Earth. The scale of the larger orb to Earth is pretty near the relative dimensions of the two planets (11.2:1). Jupiter is the king of the gods, and many of the tales that deal with Jupiter (or Zeus) involve him punishing humanity for stealing much of Grecian life from the heavens (fire, pottery, etc.). I think this might tie into the Exogenisis theory (life descending from the heavens).

I'm still working on other comparisons but I'm tapped on my knowledge of Greco-Roman mythology and astronomy. I don't know if something like this has been posted before, so I did a quick search and didn't find anything (if I missed it, I apologize). It's a thought experiment and wanted to see what other people thought about it. So... thoughts?

And you know, if you rearrange some of the letters in the lyrics to Stockholm Syndrome, you can make out the phrase "I have a giant penis!" (!!!) We're on to something here.

But more about this in my book "Muse - a case study" coming out in three months for the neat price of 1 zillion quid.

It also includes a lengthy description of how I found out the exact time and date of apocalypse (August 10th 2011 'roundabout tea time) through advanced calculations based on Muse's entire discography.

Do you have to be like this? They're just making a point about the album covers -_-

I thought Muscle Museum was because of the dictionary word order? Muse-Muscle-Museum.

The name is related to those words being near muse in the dictionary, but the song itself is supposedly about the struggle of wants and the more intellectual facets of the brain. Also, some of the lyrics refer to having worked the bottom of the ladder (played in every toilet) while the narrator basically asks for more in their life. It was just a thought in my head, someone asking to achieve greater things on an album related to a god of success (Hermes is the god of athletes, competition and commerce).

Also, for the record, I'm not really the conspiracy theory type. This isn't meant to be more than anything but fun exercise of the mind. Just wanted that stated in case people think I'm overly committed to all this.

And thanks for the interest guys. Hope you enjoyed my head's little puzzle. :)

I quite like the idea, and I can see where you're coming from, but it's a bit of a stretch. I don't believe that they're consciously themed after the planets, but it is an interesting coincidence.

I believe Black Holes and Revelations is actually themed after Mars but that's fairly common knowledge. But yeah, the rest are likely coincidental. Though if the new album is called Rings (or something alone those lines) I'm totally coming back to this.

I'm not saying that you're overthinking anything; the album covers seem like a good back-up to your theory! I'm just here to be a noob and say that you have some of your song meanings wrong.... Not even Matt knows what Plug In Baby is about!

But interesting thoughts!
