Muse - band hierarchy

How do you feel about the hierarchy in Muse? It apparently is so that it's the majority that decides, the three having even powers.

As far as I know, Matt writes and composes most of the songs, and therefore has the most to say in how the song will sound like. Dom and Chris are "just" playing, although adding their own touch and ideas to each song. Don't get me wrong, I love the trio, but to a certain degree, I feel they are expendable. It's like Matt does most of the work, so wouldn't he be feeling that after the years? "I do the most work, so I should be the one to decide most."

I think if it were any other band, the lead singer, especially one so solely responsible for the songs, would probably be the one with most to say. What do you think?

Matt also does the setlists.

Essentially, everything bad about the band is his fault.

Keep Matt in writing the songs, and maybe get someone else to pick the sets. Chris maybe? Or maybe a setlist generator could produce more varied results.

The problem is that Matt had a good system in place for the BHAR tour. He had lists of songs from each album that they were still comfortable playing, and then he picked a few songs off each list. I say Tom Kirk should write the setlists. That man is a fucking legend and he appreciates the Muse that used to be the best live band in the world.

Didn't see Muse any time before the Resistance tour, so I can't tell much on the sets besides the few bootlegs, but it looked pretty cool.

I agree with letting Tom Kirk pick the sets. This should happen.

As much as people were bitching during the BHAR tour (which I missed, unfortunately), it still had a shitload of variety compared to the TR tour. I mean for God's sake, Showbiz was the closer on at least two occasions, as well as popping up here and there during 2006. 2007 had Fury and Micro Cuts etc. The order of the setlist was pretty random at times as well.

Yeah, Dom and Chris are technically replaceable and Matt isn't. Without him there can be no Muse. But would Matt want to carry on without the other two? I doubt it.

Also, when Dom's dad died and he was having doubts over whether he could continue, it seemed more likely that the band would disband rather than replace him (I didn't know Muse even existed then, so I may have that wrong).

I would rather see them go separate ways than replacing someone.

Same here I learned of Muse when they were doing their final concerts in Europe, no chance I'd ever be able to see a band so new to me live in another country.

But BH&R looked like a solid tour. Don't see why people complained about it I would've loved to see them when they came here, especially since I've know guy who played trumpet for City of Delusion (never really met him though)

Oh and the stage with the drum riser is probably my favorite. Impressive, flashy, but doesn't overdo it or limit the performance.

This connection definitely keeps loyal fans loyal to the band as well. If the family appeal were to disappear, I would imagine some fans would as well.

Yeah, I don't think I'd stop being a fan, but their camaraderie is definitely one of the biggest reasons cementing Muse as my favorite band ever.

Absolutely! If that chemistry changes, I wouldn't be as devoted. I'd still listen to the music, but it wouldn't be the same. It's happened already to some of my favorite bands.

Everytime I see them together, even lately with some things they've done I haven't been very pleased with, they always seem like friends. They made the band as friends (Chris was sort of the last guy to enter but it's not like Matt and Dom asked a random stranger to just play bass for them) and they continue to be that. Maybe Matt is mostly responsible for Muse but I can't imagine them with any different members.

They're all matt's bitch

Awesome!!

Without Dom or Chris, Muse would sound different.

Without Matt, Muse wouldn't exist.

+28346632 So True!!

I remember an interview in which they asked U2 about this, and someone said that the reason they have stayed together for so long was that each of them thought it was his' band.

Maybe something similar happens here  so each of them think the other two are his bitches

I approve, I approve. Plus, if the setlist was shit, we would know where to find him to complain.

They should all be just Tom's bitches really.

Don't see the point of this thread, really. In the end, who the fuck knows how it goes down at the studio and on tours?

Well we do know that Matt writes the songs and the setlists. Since Matt is the resident painter/designer as well, he probably has a bigger say about the stage designs too.

Matt is clearly the main force in just about all aspects of the band. He keeps things going forward in the direction he wants it to.

Dom is definitely very opinionated when it comes to the music they make, and will put Matt back in his place on occasion (I've seen him do it in a making of absolution vid). Which i think is a good thing. Matt running unchecked is like watching a tornado go through a neighbourhood

And Chris... I'm not sure what Chris's place is. He seems like he's content to just sort of follow wherever Matt and Dom take the music but that doesn't strike me as right.

As far as i see it, if you see Muse as a metaphorical human body, Matt is the brain and Dom and Chris are the heart.
