cheddatom
There are some amazing diffusers in terms of aesthetics. That's the first result for "acoustic diffuser" on google images - pretty cool!
Neil.
I went for something much simpler. Removable foam pannels in whammy red. amidoinitrite?
Dramatic Hammer
Why are the drums in a tiny room? The only way I could see the vacuum thing working is if you 'floated' the inner room on wires/rubber dampeners and had a kind of airlock situation for the entrance... An airlock that isn't hard-coupled to the inner room yet is airtight and sturdy enough to withstand equipment being wheeled in and out. Edit: also, get rid of the parallel walls! I'm fully able to bullshit my way out of this one, it's got "vacuum pannels which the joints are suplemented with rubber connections" or some sort of bullshit like that." The drums are set up in a stone room, or another iso booth. In plan, i'll chamfer all the walls. I was just going by google images. Yeah but the inner side of a hollow panel is connected along each edge to the outer side... I realise it's not really your brief to make it work but I think the panel idea is just too scientifically flawed to stand up.
Neil.
I reckon if the edges between 2 pannels had a strip of rubber or foam, you could tackle that issue. Chamfered all the edges of the studio + practice rooms, also opted for timber panneling on the ceiling as well as the walls. It's rendering now. Tom, do you like my choice of timber floors/ceilings? I know it's a render, so it's not the real thing, but the idea is there, right?
alexandrez
I'm studying Audio Engineering and we had a lecture about Architecture and Acoustics. The lecture was given by WSDG. they do really impressive studios. they showed us one particular project that they made in an apartment for a famous brazilian artist. they turned a common room into a professional studio and the most amazing thing was that right underneath there is a bedroom. he showed us the project and it's a room within a room, of course, but it's hanging from the ceiling on lots of springs, and there is this blocks of foam supporting underneath as well. everything was treated acoustically, all the electric wiring, from the air conditioning... everything. and i'm not quite sure but i think he said they vacuum'd the space in between the walls too. they can play anytime without bothering whoever's sleeping right underneath. there are some pictures here: http://po.wsdg.com/portfolio.asp?id=IveteSangalo&category=private the website is pretty cool
cheddatom
I went for something much simpler. Removable foam pannels in whammy red. amidoinitrite? Well, parallel hard surfaces are bad. I don't think your little alcoves are going to offer much isolation at all. Normally you would have one big live room, and a couple of small isolation rooms. The drums would be done in the live room, and if the band want to play in the same room, they would stick their cabs in the isolation rooms and use headphones for monitoring. You seem to have the equipment set up in the opposite way IE amps in the live room, drums in an attempt at isolation. I have to agree on this vacuum idea. Why not just hang the room within a room, rather than invent this vacuum panel concept which is never going to be practical (or realistic?). I guess you might be a good chunk into the project in which case that's no use sorry! EDIT: I meant to say, the image is cool. What wood are you using for the floor? Neil.
I ended up chamfering the corners of all the rooms where music is going to be played, namely the studio rooms and the practice rooms. i did it with the control rooms and editing rooms, just for consistency, although i doubt it'll be that necessary. I'm pretty much done with the designing at this stage, i cant afford to spend more time on it tbh. i've a fuck load to do for presentation next week, so i'm just doing the final drawings for it as is. I've just marked the walls as thick black lines (VERY risky from my point of view. some lecturers go for it, others will tear your presentation to shit for it.) I've to make models of it this week anyway. If they ask what the wall composition is, i'll wing it. lol! edit: according to VRay, the wood is Eastern Birch. whatever. Neil.
it's not actually getting built! it's for a studio project. there's 5 different sites on either side of the river between waterford and fidown. Mine is pretty much directly south of glengrant, on the bend of the river.

Neil.
youghal isn't that far really. If you're in WIT, they've a studio in the main campus. I bet you could get access to it. They've like €250k worth of equipment in there sitting idle.

Neil.
So my final presentation sheets were printed today. Pretty pleased with how they came out. We've to submit our materials on tuesday, so i've to make a 1:50 model between now and then. For those of you who are unfamiliar with building scales, my building at 1:50 is more than a metre long. A lego man is the height of a person at 1:50 afaik. my whole day's work so far was the foundations, ground floor slab, office and 2 other walls made. Gonna be a long few days. Cheers again for the help from everyone. Finally getting to the end of this. Really delighted with how this is turning out.

Neil.
hahahah! Well we also have fun subjects like Structures, Building Technology, Environmental Analysis, Urban Design, Law, Professional Practice, History of Architecture and my personal favourite, Dissertation. Next year, pretty much all of that is replaced with one god awful word. Thesis.
Lord MFC
Just been reading thrugh the tread, nice project Neil. AND I have followed all forum rules except rules one, which you have also broken, both now, and with my previous ban. Six, where reporting a mod to another mod is useless. I have not however broken rule seven as I have not argued publicly about any "decision". This will be my last post on this forum. A certain mod, who I cannot name for fear of breaking the rules, has previously banned me for no good reason and publicly belittles a forum user that tries to help him. I am not leaving for any other reason. I have no gripe with other members on the forum. It's sad that i'm taking this to extremes but when I can no longer help another forum member or advertise the sale of an item (The reason for my previous ban. Not however the "multiple accounts" or "Ignoring moderator warnings" Other mods can check this [not breaking rule seven as this is a statement not an argument],) Shakespeare: "A person is remembered for his entrances and exits." If this holds true. What a shit memory... sooo... wtf. russel hissy fitted out of her? holy shit! haha how epic
Neil.
presented my project today for final marking. Really mixed critique. They said that the building, as a studio, was pretty good. They felt that I could have experimented more with the form and accoustics, and that the building could have been pushed further. They said that it was good that I looked into different areas to get research done (I mentioned that I had asked around on a web forum to other musicians who use these buildings regularly) but they said that ultimately, I should make my own decisions, and not be influenced by these opinions as much. They also said that the building feels as though I'm having a battle with myself over the appropriateness of the building on the site. Then they got picky, and started to comment on really irrelevant shit, and i started getting very pissed off. In conclusion, they were impressed with my research, knowledge of music, and not impressed that i didn't develop the building further, and that all your opinions are valid, but ultimately you all can fuck off Once again, MASSIVE YELLOW THANKS to everyone who contributed to this project. Although I didn't get the response i feel i deserved to it, I certainly enjoyed it, and learnt a lot. If i get some time over the next few days, I'll put up images of the final design, models etc, and when i get my marks in August, I'll let you all know how it went. cheddatom
should have gone mental with acoustic research. You could have created a dead room that looked normal, or a dead room with a pipe up to a reverb chamber - something like that'd be ace.
Neil.
yeah i know. I'm seriously pissed off tbh, and seriously angry today (INFRACTIONS FOR EVERYBODY!!!). After a really bad crit, you always feel a bit deflated. In hindsight, I could have done more with accoustic qualities, but shit happens I guess. I still learnt a lot, and enjoyed the project, so if i pass, i'll be happy!
