Cheese Question

MUSESTL

Recommended Posts

i wouldnt say that nsc is as much as gl though, then again gl is just vienna

the point that i was trying to make is that just using the word cliche' on its own is not really enough as its very ambiguous as to what you mean, the songs in question are predictable more than anything

True, but its clear to me what people mean when they say it. I think you are right technically for sure, but a little bit pedantic maybe.

It always annoys me everytime when fans bring up the piano solo to justify the song. It's just so predictable of Muse. :indiff: As if to say adding some classic piano cords would satisfy muse fans even though how sell out the song is.

I'm not saying it does justify the song. I like the piano part. The rest is blah. I don't like the song as a whole, because it falls short of their usual musical quality.

Starlight is terrible by modern pop standards. Sounded heavily dated in 2006, let alone in 2011.

It's easy to slag off modern commercial pop, but it's never been good, just the best stuff lasts. I'd be amazed if more than a handful of people would know Starlight, let alone enjoy it, if it was played in a club now, always a good indicator.

Supermassive Black Hole however, was decent pop. Knights Of Cydonia was fun self-indulgent cheese.

To me, club music =/= good pop.

It equals terrible.

What is it like being closed-minded?

Huh? Because I like certain kinds of music and dislike others, that makes me closed-minded? I listen to all sorts of music, from rock to rap, and I'll give anything a listen to decide whether or not I enjoy it. I hardly call that closed minded. *shrug*

But club music is always bad?

Starlight might not be a bad song, but it is bad pop. Do you see the difference?

(guessing that's what Haze is talking about, haven't really followed the discussion)

Well, I wasn't saying club music is objectively bad, that would just be ignorant. Just meant that I personally don't like that style of music, so to my ears it is "bad."

And as for your second point I'm not sure what you're saying. If Starlight is pop, and I think it is a good song, could I not then call it a good pop song? Speaking subjectively of course.

"Club" music doesn't mean anything though.

I know it's not a specific genre, but all clubs play pretty much the same type of music. Music you can dance to, whatever that entails. That's irrelevant though. The point I was trying to make was that I don't think you can judge whether or not Starlight is a good [pop] song by playing it in a club and judging the reaction/how well it fits/whatever.

You're not getting me on either of the points. Club music is always bad to you. Does this mean that they couldn't possibly play anything you'd enjoy?

As for the second point, I wrote a lot about it, but really can't get my point across very well.

An example. Let's say Muse wrote a dance track, but it failed miserably in every dance related environments. Wouldn't this make it a bad dance track? That doesn't mean it has to be a bad song.

Why not? Clubs are playing popular music that is catchy, dancable and gets people going. Isn't this exactly what makes a good pop song?

Well you can in clubs that play pop music, which is what I was referring to. Not every club to dedicated to underground dance music.

There are plenty of people who like to go out and dance to what they hear on the radio.

1. I suppose any club could potentially play something I enjoy, since they can play whatever they want. I have yet to hear "club" music that I actually like. I'm just not into dance music, sorry. That's the kind of club music I'm referring to. I know there are other types, I suppose I should have specified.

2. And I see what you are saying there, but I don't think it's as easy to judge a "good" pop song as it is to judge a song that's good to dance to. What's the criteria?

Fair enough. I don't frequent clubs because I'm not into dancing, and if that's the only way to judge whether or not a song is good pop, then I guess I was wrong and Starlight is a crap pop song. Which I enjoy.

I never said it's the only way, just a good way.

What do you define as "dance music"?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. When I think club songs I think of..ah, how to describe it...you know, when there's a DJ remixing pop or R&B songs with techno beats or whatever. Terrible definition I know, but that's what I was referring to. That's the only type of "club" music I've heard and seems to be the most popular.

So in other words you don't know what you are talking about? :p

Ah, ok. I guess we'll just agree to disagree there. :p

If you don't go to them, you're in no position to disagree.

Haha I'm just terrible at describing things. I couldn't even describe the room I'm sitting in.

And I don't need to go dancing all the time to disagree that danceable=good criteria for what makes a good pop song. I'm not saying that you're wrong in any way, just that I have different criteria. :p

eh?

You changed it?
