Cheese Question

MUSESTL

Recommended Posts

It's impossible to miss the hate on this board for the cheesiness in songs like Guiding Light, Neutron Star Collision and Starlight. I'm not denying that they are cheesy, but I have a question: why don't people criticize the cheese/cliche in songs like Space Dementia ("I'd cut your name in my heart") or Butterflies and Hurricanes ("Best, you've got to be the best, you've got to change the world") or Exogenesis ("Who are we? Where are we? When are we? Why are we in here?")

I don't mean to attack any of the songs (I'm actually a fan of them all); I'm just wondering

Ok, cliche I guess....

People just don't like GL, NSC or Starlight because they're shite songs.

they're not that bad, its just 'its not muse' etc seems to be the majority of the arguments i see, and obviously some people just dont like them because they're throwaways and dont really resonate with them (the songs that is lol im not trying to start :srsb33f: )

plus they dont sound like radiohead :ninja:

i will be honest i do love the cheese for the lulz/epically exaggeration of gestures etc

Because there's no longer all that angst that was once covering up the inherent cheesiness of their music.

without getting into it too deeply, theres alot of truth in this. Incidentally, I love Starlight and Invincible, but dont like Guiding Light and NSC. Make of that the little that its worth.

Am I misinterpreting your post, or are you implying that all modern pop is inherently bad?

I think that's what they are implying, yes.

I would say most modern pop is absolute crap, especially when compared with pop back in the day, The Beatles and the like. But there are exceptions, and Starlight is one of them in my opinion.

Starlight is terrible by modern pop standards. Sounded heavily dated in 2006, let alone in 2011.

It's easy to slag off modern commercial pop, but it's never been good, just the best stuff lasts. I'd be amazed if more than a handful of people would know Starlight, let alone enjoy it, if it was played in a club now, always a good indicator.

Supermassive Black Hole however, was decent pop. Knights Of Cydonia was fun self-indulgent cheese.

Because questioning the meaning of existance is not very cheesy at all my friend.

When you question it with cliche questions like that, it is.

You also ignored the other two lines

Your topic states cheese in the title, so that's my first reason for commenting on this.

Questioning the existence is also not very cliché I'd say, unless you can tell me the answer? Trapped in God's program is in fact a very good statement here, because it's a follow up to 'aping my soul'. Creationism vs Evolution vs Existentialism!

But if you want to you can stick to suffering and moaning people if that floats your boat.
