Recommended Guitar Thread

Ok so I see there is a Recommended gear thread but from what I see it only refers to amps, pedals etc.

So I thought it'd be a good idea to make a thread more focused on guitars in general.

I posted this really so that people could get an idea of what people prefer and have a specific area to ask about guitars (yes I know there is a question thread for gear, but again it looks more focused on pedals, amps etc.).

So now that's sorted, I'd like to ask if anyone has had any experience with Vintage LP guitars?

I'm looking to get a new guitar, my current one is out of a starter pack. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I want to get something better. At the minute I gotta Fortissimo strat copy but the itonation is horrible, high action, buzz everywhere, horrible at keeping tune. Not that it's the reason as I could pay to get it fixed (I'm new to the whole fixing guitar thing).

So I was looking at a Vintage V100 LP copy BAM: http://www.guitarbitz.com/475.htm

Gloss black with chrome hardware although Cherryburst looks pretty nice too.

I was then going to remove the pick guard or change it to a black one to look a bit more clean-black looking. I was also going to change the pups because apparently the Wilkinson stocks aren't the best, to some Seydunc-a-duncs (Crap pun but oh well). I have like 250 quid to spend max including any upgrades.

So my question is, is there anything better (I'm not 100% keen on an Epi because the V100's tend to be built better apparently according to UG) that I could get?

Also, if I was to get the V100, should I keep the stock Wilkinson pups or upgrade with some extra cash to Seymours? Also what type of Seymours? I play GnR, Led, White Stripes, Muse, 30 Seconds To Mars. I also want to learn some heavier stuff like Enter Shikari.

Sorry to be a n00b and waste your time like this, but I just can't decide :$ :$

Mexican or American strat?

Does the price difference have anything to do with quality rather than where it's made?

When I get one, I'm putting Texas Specials in it, and putting a chrome pickguard on it, not that it matters.

I've pretty much decided Mexican, but I want to be sure I'm not getting some shitty-ass squier-grade guitar (exaggeration) if I buy it.

Partly quality, partly where it's made.

I have an American one, it's definitely better than the Mexican, definitely need to replace the pickups in the Mexican ones immediately. They might be wired stupidly as well, can't remember now.

Edit - Yeah, the Mexican is wired so that neither of the tone controls effect the bridge pickup, something that I really didn't like personally and would have looked to change immediately. Plus the bridge pickup is horribly bright.

With Strats, the more you can spend, the better the odds of getting a great one (Avoid Highway One Strats though). Whereas with Teles, it is not so important.

I would suggest saving up and buying Gibson Les Paul. I got mine for $700 (USD). I'm too lazy to get a calculator, I think that's somewhere around 450 pounds or so. There's a les paul that gibson makes that's pretty cheap. It's a Les Paul Studio with a worn cherry finish. Much cheaper with the same tonality. Just search around for "Gibson les paul Studio faded". Unless you can't wait to get a better guitar. Squier is shit compared to Epiphone, but Epiphone is shit compared to Gibson. Just saying,

What's wrong with the highway one series?

and to the thread starter. i'd recommend a tokai.

i had an LP copy made by them, which was in the £700 range. there were a few things i'd change about it (the nut, and MAYBE the pickups) but otherwise, the build quality was better than pretty much every modern gibson i've played.

not tried a vintage, and epis are alright if you find a good one (same with gibsons).

The pound is shit though. You won't get a Gibson Les Paul for less than £650, unless it's a junior/melody maker...

Gibson Les Paul Studio Raw Power

Heavy as fk apparently, 100% maple. Maple fretboard looks odd on a Gibson. These haven't been successful...

What the hell? Damn. In America, guitar's are cheaper.. Even though a pound is worth more than a USD, it costs more pounds to buy a guitar? I feel sorry for you over there. That's bullshit. :stunned:

Anyway,

I have an unrelated question.

The exact fender strat I want is one that has the following:

Black Body

No-Inlay Ebony fretboard

Painted Black headstock

Chrome pickguard

Chrome Hardware

3 Single Coil Pickups

Black or Grey pickups and knobs

The wood it's made out of doesn't matter to me. As long as it's Mahogany or maple or ash or something of good quality like that. Same with the neck.

Has fender ever made a guitar like this? The pickguard, pickups, and knobs don't matter. I can simply buy them separate. Can someone show me the closest thing they can find to this?

The closest I've seen was the guitar center edition (?) of the aerodyne strat, but I can't even find a picture of it. It had inlays, but fits your description otherwise. I can't remember what the fretboard was made of though.

@ James

Found the Aerodyne on Musicians Friend. Not bad, but It's made of basswood. From what I hear, basswood is terrible.

@MrMuseFan

Those are similar, but don't have a painted headstock to match the body. Also, they are HH and HSS. I don't want any humbuckers,

I suggest picking up a Standard Strat (are you after SSS?) and modding it to your taste.

Or buying all the parts individually and putting them together. You'll get more accurate that way, espesh with fretboard/inlays/headstock :)

axesrus.com even have the eboniez neck :awesome:

I'll back that claim up, for basses at least.

I have a bass made of Basswood (irony) and while it's not the most horrible thing out there, you'll want something else. Basswood usually leaves a very smooth but very flat response to everything. My bass has no mids and rolling the treble up just brings out the string plucking more, not any more treble tone. Apparently people with basswood guitars cry out over the same thing. Dents very easily too, don't get me started on that and you'll only ever find solid finishes. The grain isn't jaw dropping nice.

Might be quite difficult to find exactly what you are after with a strat... Might have to be partially customised but jack259 has the right idea...

i wouldn't say that tbh, it's just a fairly neutral sounding wood...doesn't have much character i guess.

Highway 1 Strat is shite, Highway 1 Tele is great though.

guessing it's a pickup thing mainly? are you familiar with the american special series?

basswood like the fish not the instrument though

what?

the "bass" in basswood is pronounced the same as the fish, if that's what you mean

Does anyone know much about Paul Reed Smith guitars?

front.jpg

Did a stint with a Custom 24. Not perfectly my thing, but the USA-made ones are damn nice. I think the "Private Reserve" ones get kinda ridiculous, but they're really nice guitars. Best non-locking trem I've ever played, and the controls (like the rotary pickup selector) were cool once you got used to them
