  1. And technical brilliance is objectively good? How do you compare the technical aspect of one song with that of another? Is there any empirical evidence? Or are you just...

using subjective ideas to determine which song deserves credit for being the best?

I mean for this to actually be a valid discussion, music would have to be MADE with a purpose of technical brilliance. Fact is that when Muse (and most other bands) write songs, they write them with the intention of making good songs, but it has nothing to do with technicality. It might as well be that emotion that you connect with in The Handler, or the personal lyrics of a song like Dead Inside, along with it's minimal approach.

I'll just add, that I never understood why people (most notably metal fans, but obviously it would an exaggeration to say it's only them) tend to say that if something is "complicated technically and hard to play" it's automatically better than a 3 chord song. In my opinion music is about emotions, a message or simply about fun. And I'd take a fine Ed Sheeran's ballad over emotionless 10 minute metal song anytime even though I generally enjoy metal music.

  2. I want to kill myself every time Mercy comes on so I'd agree that it's depressing.

    lol yeah

wrost thing is that mercy is a single and probably revolt will be too.. well i guess it will be time to grab some beer when these songs come on during concert

  3. nice there's actually an interesting conversation despite my post being just some angry rant..

btw. i love GOOD pop music in general.. as for muse i freaking adore madness, endlessly, bliss etc. it's just that revolt and mercy aren't actually good. i know it's my opinion and all but it freaks me out when such poor songs like mercy and revolt are singles while the handler and reapers are not. and i don't like the tendency of muse releasing only pop songs as singles. it's pathetic from them trying to please the mainstream radio stations.

  4. Revolt will be one of the best singles they've put out from the last 3 albums, aside from Dead Inside and UD. I hope it gets popular as fuck, I've got a feeling it won't though.

You have allowed this Dark Lord to twist your mind, until now...until now you have become the very thing you swore to destroy.

  5. Who cares

hurr durr tasteless pelicans I am the vanguard of musical taste durr

I shall clean this world from all who stand against good (my) taste of music!!

Are pelicans tasteless? Never tried one

Well there's first time for everything!

Besides, couldn't you just have kept this in the Revolt thread, no need to make a complete new thread just to complain about it being a single.

    If you're not with me, then you're my enemy > : (

  6. lol they actually did it..

You want a real rocker like Reapers or Handler to be the single, just like Supermacy, Uprising, KoC, SS etc were?? Well f*** you. We're gonna show our another crap pop song because Mercy was not enough. Besides just look at comments on the facebook.. those tasteless pelicans love it :)) Some even say that it's the best song on album next to Mercy :) Sooo. everything's good, right?

You've got strength, you've got soul

    You're not afraid, you're not a drone :)))

    FOR F***'S SAKE.

  7. Revolt - I don't like that they went full American-rock here. And bad American rock, to me. The Killers. I hate this band. They are an overrated bunch of crap, apart from some songs. Still, even if I did like them, I wouldn't want Muse to sound like them. Ever. I am able to stand the song, but maybe if I am doing something, like cooking, and I just need some background music. But I don't like this track, and I don't want to make myself like it just because 'I got used to it.' You get used to a lot of shit in life, doesn't mean it's good. 3/10

I agree.. I mean I am a total The Killers (and B. Flowers) fan and I know every song they ever recorded :p Even The Killers are above songs like Revolt (btw. there's not much of American rock in The Killers, truly. For a band that comes form Vegas they are really British.. Influence from Joy Division, Pet Shop Boys and a few other British artists I suppose). Even their most pop record 'Day & Age' with radio hits like Human or Spaceman delievers a lot of actually good, positively cheesy, party songs. Revolt is none of that, it literally is utter garbage.

But apart from Revolt I really like Drones.. for me it's a solid 8/10 (without Revolt :p).

  8. Showbiz: The angst at times, which feels very sincere, along with some of their best tracks.

OoS: The consistency in sound and style which makes every song feel like it really belongs there (even Feeling Good). The intensity of this album is only really comparable to some parts of Absolution, other than that it's nothing they've never come close to again.

Absolution: Like I said, the intensity, for example songs like Hysteria, SS and B&H. This is Muse's best album in terms of orchestration and string work, which sadly isn't all Matt.

BH&R: Some of Muse's best songwriting, and experimentation that actually felt necessary. Muse needed to move forward at that point in their career and BH&R was a great album for trying things out. Sadly they did the same thing twice more before going backwards again. Would have loved it if they followed this album up with a straight up synthrock album, or perhaps a more orchestral one. Basically, either Uprising, Resistance and UD, OR Exogenesis. Putting them on the same album only felt weird imo.

The Resistance: Well...it has some decent songs.

    The 2nd Law: See above.

Drones: A step in the right direction, and some cool tracks and ideas. A bit too early to compare it to other albums imo but it feels like this one will keep me interested longer than the previous two did.

SO MUCH THIS. I agree with every statement. And especially the part about Muse making synhtrock/orchestral album! It should have happened :p

  9. Muse don't really have any particularly hard guitar solos but Madness is probably one of the easier ones tbh. I'd say Reapers, The Handler, Invincible, Animals, The Groove, Survival, Dark Shines, Stockholm Syndrome and even Guiding Light are all harder.

Nah I don't know if you actually ever played a real guitar but SS and GL are trivial to play. Dark Shines while being insanely awesome is also kinda easy (ok, a bit more complicated around 3:35)

With the rest I agree, especially the ones with tapping (oh at least I kinda suck at it^^). And also I agree, that Muse guitar parts are generally fairly easy to play. Now play it and sing in the way Matt does at the same time tho :D

  12. Does anybody else have to think of the Django Unchained soundtrack when listening to the beginning of the song?

You haven't really watched any Western movies (apart from Django that is, if we can consider it a pwoper western movie, not just a pastiche), have you? :>
