  1. It's been 18 years since Showbiz and Muse's sound had changed a bit (or a lot) with each album. As Matt & co. grew older, their songwiriting and general idea of making music changed as well. What is the thing you miss most about them?

    For me it's definitely Rachmaninov influence. You could hear it a lot on OoS, Absolution and on Showbiz to some extent. For me, those albums reinvented the use of piano in rock music. The piano was menacing, grand and thrilling. Never befre have I heard something like that in popular music.

    Nowadays Matt uses piano for ballads or as a supportive melodic instrument like in Mercy or Starlight. Now, I know that Explorers melody was heavily inspired by Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.2 (Adagio sostenuto), which is my favourite Rachamaninov's piece by the way, but that is probably the only exception since Abso and it's a ballad.

    So.. how about you?

  2. A tour cycle trying to accommodate casuals, hardcore, Matts tastes, keeping the sets short;

    {Drill Sergeant}

    Psycho

    Plug in Baby

    Interlude + Hysteria / Map of the Problematique

    Dig Down

    {Isolated System}

    The Handler / Supremacy

    Supermassive Black Hole

    Prelude + Starlight

    Citizen Erased / Butterflies & Hurricanes / New Born

    Hate This and I'll Love You / Sing For Absolution

    Munich Jam

    Madness

    Mercy / Dead Inside

    Time is Running Out

    Bliss / Assassin

    Stockholm Syndrome

    The Globalist

    {Drones}

    That's actually a pretty realistic and amazingly diverse setlist that would please everyone.

  4. I've really neglected MK Ultra over the last few years but over the last couple of days I've really re-discovered its brilliance. Started playing it after falling in love with The Handler again, and it just reminded me what a good song it is. Also Showbiz and City Of Delusion, which I also hadn't listened to for a while and kind of forgot just how good they are.

    I love that long shout on 'avenge' in CoD. Gives me shivers every time.

  5. Exactly! I dislike a bit FM, but I love DI and enjoy Madness. At the same time I find Dig Down dreadful. I don't get people using counterarguments like "hurr durr you should realise they evolve and change their style go back to Abso or OoS hurr durr". It's not about the style we're complaining.

  6. I don't mind playback backing vocals, though it's a a bit shameful, because Matt is getting old - no escaping from it. Although in my opinon they should just change the way they play some songs. Lower key etc. Even if they sound different - it will be more genuine.

    Now, NKOK is unacceptable and unforgivable.

  7. Lyrics have nothing to do with how light a sing is. You can dance to the Egyptian sounding CoD but Resistance is mainly just depressing with the odd jarring pop part.

    [

    Psycho and Reapers are, they're just not pop. CoD is one of the catchiest songs they've made. MKU is very Muse and doesn't have that sound that could make it into the charts. It's a bit OoS weird. Unnatural Selection is samey throughout and is just rock. Only rock song that got popular was Uprising, and that was because it was extremely catchy, despite how dark it sounded.

    How can you think that Resistance, an album with Resistance and a three part symphony, is more catchy and modern than Black Holes, an album that has popular, catchy song one after the other and no songs that don't belong in our time?

    I don't get how anyone doesn't get that from the Egyptian sounding CoD. It's light, fast and cheerful.

    OoS could be dark, but it was all over the place like 2nd Law is. It doesn't have one set theme running through it.

    This post is so cancerous... CoD Egyptian? OoS all over the place? Musically? Are you sure you have listened to the entire album? Calling Uprising dark and Resistance depressing (come to think about it... when I first heard it I cringed so hard I actually felt depressed). I know it's kinda subjective but dude... you're trolling, aren't you? Sure you are. You must be.

  8. Is it just me now or Muse seriously needs to take a break from touring and making music? Like a year or two or three to clear their minds? Not only is their music uninspired, but they even look tired and bored. ANKOK playback is the last straw for me. I missed their 2 concerts in my country during Drones Tour. I regretted it because they played CE and Assassin on the 2nd gig, so I was hoping to see them in 2018... but looking at the stream from last night's gig.. I'm not sure I want to anymore.

  9. On some songs I think the acoustic drums for hip-hop style beats was fine. Do I Wanna Know was a great use of it, and it also worked on Arabella and Fireside. The problem is that it then become repetitive and then out n out lazy when it became apparent that effectively everything apart from R U Mine was using it.

    I found the melodies of Knee Socks, Snap out of It distinctive enough. Also there were acoustic John Lennon-esque No. 1 Paty Anthem and balladic Mad Sounds that added a bit of diversity. WYOCMWYH is probably the only song that sounds a bit uninspired - b-side Stop The World I Wanna Get Off With You would fit more here. Anyway, it's just opinions talking now :p

  10. Why would they use playback here? They're not even having a laugh. They got paid, probably a lot of money, so they should at least give a damn. Unprofessional on their side.

  11. Tell you what would have rescued this song; an enormous Eurovision-worthy key change.

    Hmm when I think about it more... Muse would make a good Eurovision song. Parts of Drones and T2L are absolutely Eurovision-worthy.

  12. EDIT: oh, and Turner's lyrics are a bit overrated, and AM is MASSIVELY overrated - a third of the album is just the same song played at different speeds with tiny melody variations (One for the Road, Knee Socks, Arabella, WYOCMWYH)

    The simplicity of the drums was part of the idea - making a simple hip hop beat but adding distinctive guitar melodies and bass. And in my opinion it worked.

    As for the lyrics - while he may not be the best, I believe he's hardly overrated. His brilliant storytelling on first 3 albums and clever poetry on the last two (not to mention Last Shadow Puppets or some of his solo work - Hiding Tonight for instance) are top quality.

  13. I like Turner, but not the best alive. Dylan is still breathing. As for someone still putting out great music, Nick Cave is up there. This is excluding rappers like Kendrick Lamar and Aesop Rock.

    Edit: also John Darnielle from The Mountain Goats.

    Ohh I did just kill Bob Dylan didn't I? :LOL: True, nonetheless I respect Turner greatly and even if 'best alive' is an exaggeration, he's surely up there among the best. I might check some Nick Cave's songs.

    I'm not into Rap really, apart from some Eminem tunes from my childhood :p He had some great songs with good lyrics back in the days; Stan, Lose Yourself or Sing for the Moment.

    I quite enjoyed Graduation from Kanye though, not sure what people make of him nowadays, musically.

  14. 'Nother interview, Matt estimates 3 songs this year and 3 songs next year.

    Commercially, definitely, but AM was easily their worst record imo. Not that that necessarily means anything with regards to Muse. As for his lyrics, Alex's are miles better than Matt's from any era tbf. Muse have made some top albums but the lyrics rarely go above 'decent', apart from maybe on Abso.

    He only said beats when he mentioned hip hop influences tbf and, like I said, his definition of that probably doesn't stray far from what we've already seen on Madness and UD.

    While I agree that AM was their worst record, it was still good. Most importantly it felt fresh and original.

    As for the lyrics - Abso had some great lyrics but so did OoS era. I still get shivers listening to Megalomania, Space Dementia, CE or even Shine. But true, Turner is consistent lyrically. Hell, in my honest opinion he is the best lyricist alive.

  15. Muse and hip hop influences? It worked well with Arctic Monkeys and their AM.. although I'm beginning to lose faith (pun not intended) in Matt's artisitc sense. Alex Turner managed to write 7 albums and 2 EPs and everything on them was fresh. Not to mention the lyrical superiority when comparing to Matt's efforts since BHAR.

  16. It was obvious what the band thought about their fans back when they started talking shit about their own forum fans, and again recently when they admitted that they refused to play even a single song in their setlists for them.

    .

    What? Did they really do that?
