    BREAKING TIMMY

    BREAKING TIM-, BREAKING TIMMY

    Happy 2019, everyone.

EDIT: By the way, my favourite track on ST might be The Void atm. BITM, TDS, Pressure and Algorithm are other serious contenders, though. I'd add Propaganda, but it's a bit too short, although its sound is slick as heck.

  2. I have to say, forcing myself to take breaks from the album is definitely paying off. Even songs like SH and TC are randomly popping into my head and nagging at me to listen to them. I only wish I'd had this level of self-discipline for the LP 2-4 trifecta, they might still excite me the way ST does now.

The breaks came naturally for me after a couple of days of intense non-stop listening. I felt the urge of listening to other artists and music genres and I've even discovered a lot of good shit (past and present alike). After "enriching" myself this way, I listened to ST again, and I loved it even more than ever (minus GUAF) to the point I almost couldn't believe it. I've never felt this way with Drones.

  3. I just noticed Matt changed the lyrics to “it’s not so easy for me.”

    Dead :'(

In the studio version he sings right that, though.

EDIT: No, wait... I've listened to the studio version just now, and I'm starting to get confused about what Matt really sings at the end of each chorus. It sounds like "Is that so easily?"... or is it "It's not so easy on me", or similar?

  4. OK, time for one of the possible ideal setlists for me, updated to ST.

  5. Doesn't help that the new album is...well, it is what it is.

I'm a fan and I have tickets but I can't say that I'm massively stoked for it or anything. Just going because it's Muse and I'm hopeful that they'll pull off something cool.

I think you're projecting a little too much.

  6. Pressure, hah.

But nah wouldn't say The Dark Side comes close either.

C'mon, TDS is probably one the best "Musest" songs made by them in recent times.

It has melodies and progressions that hark back to their Showbiz/OOS days without sounding like a tired rehash or shameless fan-service, but giving a new twist to their traditional sound.

Which isn't quite the case with Blockades, IMO. It's a good song that tries to follow the aforementioned philosophy of TDS, but to me it ends up being a bit "by-the-numbers", like a Muse song that tries too hard to be such.

  7. The run from Algorithm to Break it to me is one of the best runs since New Born to Micro Cuts

I personally extend it to SH, which I am a sucker for, now.

Also, I really think TC would have benefitted from being positioned right between TDS and Pressure.

ATM to listen to the album in this way:

    Algorithm

    TDS

    Thought Contagion

    Pressure

    Propaganda

    BITM

    SH

    Blockades

    The Void

    Dig Down

(Yes, no GUAF. I can't really digest it)

  8. I can see a person who loves OoS will rate ST higher than Abso and BHaR

I'd say it's rated higher from those who absolutely love BHAR, since it's sonically quite closer to that album in terms of experimentation.

Considerably worse songs though, nothing on ST comes close to the quality of song writing seen on Absolution... maybe BITM comes closest.

The Dark Side? The Void? Pressure?

  9. After a month, I decided that if it wasn't for GUAF and TC (and Blockades, which I find good overall, but still a "Muse-by-number" track), I'd give this album a full 9/9,5, instead it's just a sort of 8.

It's better than the last three albums mainly because there are a lot of great songs that neatly balance those two (three) ones out.

    Yep

Agree, Reapers is better for me.

  10. Stuff on BH&R has a lot of sounds similar to progressive rock even if the music itself doesn't really meet the criteria. Shallow or not it's there.

I'd say their "proggiest" album to date is TR, instead. I hear a lot of Pink Floyd-ish and 80s prog sounds in there, and there's also that monster called Exogenesis Symphony.

  11. Yes, I tried very hard to think of any, but couldn't.

QOTSA, maybe? I know they started in the 90s, but their popularity didn't start until the 2000s. Are they still mainstream popular though? I must admit I haven't heard any of their newer albums, so I don't even know if they stuck to rock. They could be making deep house now for all I know.

Oh, shit, you're right, I forgot about them!

Yes, they're still relevant after all, and they've gone a bit softer than before. But not too much, mind that: they still rock.

Like Clockwork (2013) and Villains (2017) are two really good albums.

  12. I'm trying to think of some popular and successful contemporary (hard)rock bands that solidly stuck to rock throughout their blossoming mainstream careers. I can only think of Foo Fighters, really. And maybe Metallica, who have done some crappy experiments and changed their sound a few times, but stuck to rock throughout.

I'm sure there must be more, but I can't think of them right now.

Plenty of others have stuck to their genre but lost their mainstream success, quit being a band, or have had a consistent sizable following without ever really becoming mainstream.

If we're talking about mantained popularity, then I agree about considering them still contemporary as of now, but what about their beginnings? Metallica have more than 30 years on their backs now, FF 20 and counting, too, just like Muse.

Thus, beside them, I'm afraid there are none among the ones that emerged in 2000s.

It’d be a steal if either audience fully accepted them, lol. Prog is more than song structure and lyrical themes though. Odd instrumentation and influences from disparate styles of music are just as (if not more) important to the genre. Matt’s frequent use of romantic and classical themes and chord progressions in his songs certainly give them a bit more prog cred than your average pop rock song.

That's their beauty to us, in fact. They're quite melodical and poppy at heart, but you can't really classify them in a single genre beside an umbrella-term like alt-rock, or pop rock.

  13. Hardcore fans are too harsh on Muse live, and that’s not me being elitist or getting on a high horse ‘cos I used to be just as bad.

A lot of what they get criticised for is actually pretty understandable and we often create our own disappointment by hoping for ideals (just ‘cos of how much we like them and their music tbf) and following every set. Hearing them talk about the live shows and individual songs, you can see how much care they put into it and I actually feel bad seeing some of the levels of criticism that gets thrown their way a little too easily, including stuff I used to say.

This whole comment should be framed and hanged in the living room for everyone to admire.

In all seriousness, though, I agree with everything, but obviously a good dose of healthy criticism never hurts.

  14. You know what, you are one of a number of posters that sit on this board ready to jump on and bully anyone with a contrary view to your own. Maybe you spend too much time on here and should as a normal 27 year old get out and enjoy life.

Whoa, calm down, man. What was so triggering about his comment? He just said he felt like you got the two tracks confused, with no intent of insulting you.

  15. JT has many good songs, he just has a fair share of some absolutely awful ones too

    [/color]

I'm not ashamed to admit I like the overall sound of the song Lovestones, and the fact it changes atmosphere right after the last proper chorus.

  16. Not really in the mood to derail the thread arguing that post but noticing the trends of their actual music is different that delving into motivations and implying that they are "willfully refusing to even try". It's a very loaded implication to have only one quote in retrospect as backup.

And riding off the tails of a larger band you look up to is like the very crux of growing audience as a band.

That line, as I already commented around the time of release, actually irked me.

I bet they weren't even trying (the irony!) of making up a serious arguement; to me it feels like a statement brimming with biased grudge and resentment because the band didn't take the direction they personally wanted. Which quite undermines the seriousness of their review.

  17. I'll do it only for ST, since I've already done it for the others.

  18. Most bands leave their hard rock origins behind as there careers blossom. I guess record execs tell them, you wanna make money, then you have to become more mainstream.

Uhm, I don't really think they've ever been forced to "become mainstream", beside themselves.

By reading, listening and watching their interviews throughout their carrier I really feel this current "poppish" phase it's always been their own doing at 99.9%, which makes them more accountable for eventual duds. Or, more specifically, Matt's and Dom's at least. :chuckle:
