  1. I’m conflicted. I’m guessing that this is a pretty common opinion, but when the album is wacky and weird it’s pretty strong. There are a few songs that I think are genuinely fun and interesting (Propaganda, Break It To Me, etc) that I find myself going back to, and others that I’ll be skipping. The problem is that for all these interesting moments and songs, too many either feel like uninspired pastiches or retreads. Once again Muse aren’t great at writing straight pop songs, so why do they keep filling so much of the album with them?

Acoustic Dig Down is surprisingly good tho.

  2. Agreed. I didn’t really care for the sample in the teaser, but the acoustic version is lovely. Matt is just so adorable in the video that I’m convinced that it’s my new favorite song.

I’m not sold on the sample either, but it was sooo brief that I’m reserving judgment. The melody and guitar was so sweet that I’m willing to give it a go.

  3. I also have always believed the "narrative" was a thin exterior put on what was a bunch of break up songs.

But, with the exception of DI, those songs were either written, or rewritten, in an overtly conspiracy theory/political manner. Matt's mentioned how he thought politics mirrored what was going on in his life, but that comes across completely sloppy and lacking in nuance.

Again, with the exception of Dead Inside. Other than the "unleash a million drones" line - which could have been added, or could be interpreted in a lot of non-literal ways - that song is painfully frank.

I don't believe it's a coincidence that not only are the lyrics better when the song is super personal, but the song is also better musically, as well.

Just on the last point, I guess you're more likely to invest energy to get it right when it's so personal.

  4. The whole album is about a relationship though, and DI also has the drones and conspiracy tone in it. It just blends really well, how I guess the whole album was supposed to be ideally.

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear. I essentially agree with Serpent; DI is probably a personal song written about his own relationship/it's fallout. While it was messed with and rewritten to fit into the album's concept, at its core it retains this personal nature. I doubt that any other tracks on the album are so auto biographical, because even if they are still about a relationship, they're unlikely to be about his. This is all speculation, of course.

  5. I don't know what happened to let Matt nail it on DI but he needs to bring it back because nothing else on the album came close.

My guess is that it's because the lyrics are so personal on DI. He's not just singing about drones and conspiracies, he's singing about a relationship.

  6. TaB is nuts, but it's hard to beat the audience engagement during Knights. It's like when Biffy ends with Mountains or Modest Mouse on Float On; not my favourite tracks in either bands discography, but the vibe is a great way to go out on.

  7. Anthony Fantano is arguably more relevant than Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and the like these days. At least to younger audiences who find those publications to be hopelessly biased and disingenuous, melon has a certain authenticity and honesty to his review style, and doesn't tend to make the mistake of belittling people who's taste in music he doesn't care for.

But yeah, that's not really relevant to the new album, I'll stop.

    Good luck arguing that.

  8. So pessimistic.

Even if all the first three/four singles are duff, if they decide to settle on maximum amount of songs they claimed (12) for the , we'd still have 8/9 songs to look out to.

Between Algorythm being a piano-driven song, The Dark Side being the band's current favourite one, and the "Herrmann-like" strings mentioned in that IG post, I'm still looking forward to what they could do, "traditional song structures" or not.

We'll see. I think my pessimism is well earned, though.

  9. Their worst album yet :awesome:

    Yeah... Damnit.

So either it will be random genre jumping with nothing connecting the songs, or they will share key sound elements with Dig Down and Thought Contagion.

    Not sure which is worse.

Genre hopping at least gives us the potential for a couple of good songs in with the trash.

I’d rather watch paint dry then listen to literally the same song every time from overhyped mainstream artists like that.

I get where you're coming from (even though Kendrick doesn't really fit damn sucked though fight me), but don't you see that that's kinda what Muse are these days? It's a real shame. I still love their early albums and dull sets or not they're still ace live, but the music is just rarely interesting now. And this coming from someone who quite likes Thought Contagion for what it is.

  10. I don't know why anyone would be shocked that rich/famous people are entitled, and do shitty things because they can.

Because not all rich people are cunts?

    Edit:

As someone said it has nothing to do with the band, so can we please keep it off the official forum and stay on the topic of the actual gig and performance? You are the rest of the internet to discuss whatever else you want.

    Thanks.

    Oops. Sorry.

  11. I feel like that's about the last time Timbaland was relevant.

And I think Matt made it abundantly clear that he's ok getting away from guitars. And real drums.

I'm not a huge fan of Timbaland, but he's been producing some of the biggest names for years. He's definitely still relevant.

But yeah, this interview has just about dashed my hopes for the album. Oh well.
