  1. This is why I like Fantano waiting until the end to post his score (even though I know people just skip to the end or read the description anyways).

At least that way you actually have to do something to see it, though, rather than just have it spat out at you with no real context.

As for the Pitchfork review: not really sure what the problem is, tbh. It's harsher than I expected it to be, but it's hardly a complete flogging. Is the problem here that they don't align with everyone else's reviews? Or that they don't cater to the same demographic and music tastes as everyone else? It's self-indulgent and wanky, and I would preferred if they were more specific about what they actually liked/disliked on any given song and less Radiohead references, but it's Pitchfork. You expect that.

  2. My guess is 80. Pitchfork is gonna definitely aim to bring that down, I don't know if The Needle Drop gets counted in that aggregate but if so then that probably will too.

Worth remembering that TR got a 5.9 from Pitchfork. In fact I thought both their TR and T2L reviews were pretty fair.

The City Blog review there is very good, btw.

By The Sydney Morning Herald. It also has a 5/5 in Kerrang and a 6/10 in Classic Rock, but, not online articles

    tl;dr of what Kerrang says?

  3. That's true. I felt with CE there were proper transitions into each phase of the song. Here it is abrupt. And I keep imagining what Matt changing instruments would look like during the song

Makes you appreciate how well the piano section of CE is introduced, tbh.

  4. I think had they fleshed out the riff section a bit more, allowing us to get the chance to discern the layers of instrumentation better, the transition would have been better. It's like, when the tremolo riff kicks in, we also get layers of power chords, strings, etc. and we only have so much time to process this wall of sound before it becomes a new section entirely.

Yeah, pretty much. It just doesn't feel like a smooth transition, it genuinely feels like two completely different thing glued together.

  5. Compositionally, the transition from the heavy part to the ballad is cohesive. The section ends on a change from A minor (which is the key of the section) to an A major, transitioning to the ballad in D major. Technically, this is a well-written key change since the A major to D major (or V to I) change is commonly used in classical music.

That being said, from a stylistic and production standpoint, how cohesive The Globalist is is completely subjective. Personally, I think how the riff section's transition into the finale is a bit jarring since it's so brief.

It's more the mashup at the end of the heavy section, it makes it sound completely abrupt and disconnected. And yes, the fact that it's so short.

  6. People hating this song describe it with nouns, other song names, as if that even means anything. This board is always full of cutting edge insight

    :wtf:

Possibly because they don't have the grounding in musical theory to articulate precisely, in detail, what they're hearing, but they know exactly what it is so they decide to compare it to something else so other people go "oh yeah I get what you mean"?

  7. I personally imagine the tremolo being global nuclear war and the first bomb was when it got louder. I'm assuming global nuclear war with nukes going off all over the place doesn't really last long, which is why that section would be short. Then of course it would cut to post-apocalypse with the whole piano thing.

I really hope there's some good imagery if they do a lyric video of it, I was kind of disappointed by The Handlers lack of imagery during the solo which it really needed. Then again it is just a lyric video.

This is pretty much what's suggested by the lyrics as well. So it does make sense narratively - just less so musically.
