  1. Yeah, I'm not sure I'd call the only really good songs on those albums hidden gems. From this period I'd say Sign o' the Times is a hidden gem.
  2. I do think this one will get played a fair amount, just like Guiding Light and Invincible were. Muse like having one of these kinds of songs in the middle of the setlist. This is the worst of them though...
  3. Because we all have significant others/friends/relatives that we are constantly bothering with our Muse obsession, here's my girlfriend's review of Drones. Dead Inside: She likes the emotion in the last third of the song. Likes the dumb lyrics too. Psycho: Catchy but too repetitive. Thinks the drill sergeant should have just been used for the video. Mercy: It's nice. Chorus vocal effects are too much, but liked it. Reapers: She didn't remember right away which one this was. The Handler: It's kind of "eh." She doesn't like how quiet the vocals are, that's probably why. Defector: That one's good. Revolt: Not horrible until that chorus or prechorus or whatever. Sounds like a musical. Aftermath: Skip. Probably the worst one. The Globalist: Three different songs, not sure how to judge. Generally a bad idea. Drones: No wait, this is the worst one. "That's not even a song." I don't think not being an obsessive Muse fan helped lol. Dead Inside was probably her favorite, but also thinks the album goes off the rails toward the end.
  4. Came in thinking it's between Space Dementia and Butterflies and Hurricanes. Now I am disappointed and don't even know what to do anymore.
  5. If you loved Uprising but can't get into any of their recent lyrics, it's possible you might have just changed somewhat as a person from when you first got into that song. Matt can write some great lyrics, but most of us wouldn't point to that one as an example of it. Mostly he's great at conveying emotion in some relatively basic statements. He sings the hell out things like "When will this loneliness be over," "I want you now," "Why can't we start it over again?" and so on, all of which are hugely common human thoughts and emotions, which is why so many of us love those songs. Very rarely he'll take it one step further and actually throw in some clever turn of phrase in there and we'll latch on to it to defend his lesser moments (looking at that one Hoodoo line everyone throws out when this argument comes up), but for the most part its very raw emotional lines that work best for him. And no, that doesn't make him Julian Casablancas, but there is still something to be said for that ability. But if you've never cared for that aspect of his lyrics, then I'm not sure how you can be too disappointed with where they are now. Mercy really isn't significantly worse than Uprising in that sense. Hell, Animals is way better as far as that theme goes, in my opinion! But yes, overall the lyrics have gotten much worse and very quickly. I don't think it's because he just can't do better though. He just seems less interested or inspired to write those kinds of things we loved from the earlier albums. If anything it's a bit more bleak for those of us who loves those earlier, "whiny" songs. If you love the political anthems, I'd stick around for the next album. One would think they can only go back up in overall quality after Drones.
  6. It's not really that it's bad, but that you can imagine how much better it would have been with a bit of variation, or some vocals, or you know, something over the second half.
  7. Defector has the coolest one imo. I love the whole aesthetic, plus JFK works really well with the actual speech on screen. Matt looks really noticeably short in it though lol
  8. No joke, JFK is one of the highest points of the album. Also by far the strongest lyrically lol.
  9. God damn it, that just makes me mad. This is the one issue that kept this from being a great album for me and I knew it didn't make sense for Matt to suddenly get THAT bad. Hope he starts to at least tighten them up live eventually.
  10. Alright, here we go. I'll be quick about the previously released ones. Dead Inside: Embarrassing lyrics that fit awkwardly into the song, but the instruments sound good. 6/10 Psycho: Solid riff, catchy melody, lyrics are silly but they fit nicely into the song. If only it had one less chorus (the third one). 7.5/10 Mercy: Catchy melody, serviceable lyrics with no words awkwardly sticking out anywhere, and a tight structure! No time wasted. So grateful for that. 8.5/10 Reapers: Best song on the album. Could compare this to Assassin, SS, Animals... It's that good. 9.5/10 The Handler: Great choruses, reminds me of Darkshines at times, which is one of my all time favorites. Still, couple of weirdly fitting lines, and of course, the solo/breakdown. If Matt sang over it or something, it'd be perfect. As it is, it's just a glaring missed opportunity. 8.5/10 And now for the real walls of text: Defector: There's about two thirds of an awesome song in here... It's just the verse where things fall apart. The melody sounds made up on the spot, even worse than the worst part of Dead Inside, and there's not much instrumentally to support it. Love that solo though. Hard song to grade because of how wide the gap is between the high points and the low points... 7/10 Revolt: The One Direction and Taylor Swift comparisons are spot on, except T-Swift might have actually made something out of this shit. Guiding Light and Big Freeze are Space Dementia to this thing. It's right out of the damn Disney channel. 2/10 Aftermath: Wait, no. This is worse. Or is it? I don't even know anymore. Whose album is this? It's a cheesy wedding song. They could play this at a country music festival/cookout. So generic I don't know what else to say. 1/10 The Globalist: Has the best instagram clip! ...Hidden somewhere after the 3-minute-long intro and the repetitive riffage without any lyrics to properly sell the heaviness. Then comes another of the many stunning examples of boneheaded lyrics: "There's no countries left... I think I destroyed them all???" Oops! Seriously though, there's a good song in here (or maybe what should have been two separate good songs), but they're buried under so much padding. Maybe the problem was that if you took out all the unnecessary repetitions in this album, you'd be a good 10 minutes under their next shortest album. Maybe a super long track time just looked on a playlist like a better ending to the whole thing (well, the part of it with instruments anyway...). Whatever it is, like a lot of other parts of this album, the problem is that it leaves you thinking of what could have been, which is even worse than if it had just been entirely forgettable. 4/10 Drones: Um. I don't know. I don't really have a problem with trying this after you get all your proper album tracks out of the way. When you only have 10 though, and several have already been half-baked, drawn out, generic crap... It feels like you're stretching here to justify calling this a full LP. I mean it's nice, but it represents a general laziness throughout the album. Hope they actually try it live and do something crazy with it, or that view will only be reinforced even further... 5/10 Overall, I'm not disappointed with what I got, but with what I almost could have gotten if they had spent more time fine tuning it. But Psycho, Mercy, Reapers, The Handler, Defector... That's not a bad haul. Especially Reapers. Hope we can just keep that and one or two others for the next tour. We'll do better next time.
  11. I get this same feeling, and I wonder if the "very tight" deadlines they had might have something to do with it. I'm not sure why they set about a whole album release strategy with the songs still being recorded/mixed. Not that they rushed them or anything, but maybe if they'd had a few more months to think about them there would be more variation in The Handler's breakdown, Psycho might have been cut down a bit, The Globalist might have flowed better... and that's just the good ones. It's a real shame, because it could have been a very strong album I think. Hopefully this doesn't become a trend going forward.
  12. The slow part's vocals are really bad and awkward. The rest is pretty damn good. Not sure how to feel yet overall.
  13. I think someone on here said it best when they said Muse don't do what they do for money, but for fame. Being "successful" has always been a driving force for them, which is part of what made them so good at first, but now has them becoming more and more just another big stadium rock band. They want to go down as the next U2.
  14. I think Matt will sleep soundly on his mounds of cash. They're still printing money, and they seem perfectly happy making afterthought music to justify another world tour, which is what they really want to be doing. When the next tour starts, they'll keep one single and one they actually like (DI and Reapers to match last cycle's Madness and Animals) and move right on with their success.
  15. Man you guys are way too harsh on The Resistance. Or you just haven't gone back and listened to it enough. It's definitely better than Drones imo! And way more Musey anyway. Absolution > Origin > Showbiz > Black Holes = Resistance > 2nd Law >= Drones
  16. Vocal melodies are all over the place in this album in general. Not enough attention to rhyme structures and syllable counts kills a lot of it for me. It's not like he can't do better with the lyrics. Idk what he's thinking, hope he takes a bit more time with it next time.
  17. Revolt and Aftermath are super generic. Any other band could have written these songs. But the good news is I doubt either will survive this tour. If we keep Reapers and Psycho, with an occasional Handler appearance, that'll be fine.
