  1. gahh! i want. hmmm, i'm just starting a new job so may go for it when the money starts coming in, don't know when that'll be though. don't take that as an offer or anything, if someone beats me to it then so be it. but that's a great price for a cracking amp.
  2. congrats indeed! tis a good job i'm getting a wacom tablet for my birthday (with any luck)
  3. yupp it's super expensive if you go for the nikon/canon lights and branded stuff. but what sealed it for me was the yongnuo RF-602/3 transceivers being so cheap, pocketwizards are nice but expensive, even for their cheapest as I was going to get the plus x's but the 560 III's have an RF603 receiver built in. Yongnuo have really hit on something good and are only rising in popularity, even amongst pro's. my shopping list is growing though, umbrella, stands, RF603's, softbox, YN560 II's.
  4. Yonguo YN-560 III has arrived! my strobist/off camera lighting education can begin
  5. beautiful camera, just a tad out of my price range. especially love this shot whats with that light leak/flare (?) at the bottom? or is it a reflection from the table? can't tell.
  6. glad I could help. and yep, join the club. my next lens purchase will be an 85 1.8 for portraiture and 35 1.8 for my wider needs. now if only i had a job...
  7. essentially I believe that's because the of the 18-200's f/stop, 3.5-5.6? meaning that at 18mm it's maximum aperture is 3.5 and 200 it's 5.6. lenses aren't designed to be their clearest at their widest aperture so at 18mm it'll be sharpest around f/8 and at 200mm at f/11 (roughly). whereas something like a 50mm 1.8 will be sharpest at f/2.8, allowing far more light in and more of that sexy bokeh. I'm not a fan of those one zoom fits all style lenses like the 18-200, you're just sacrificing too much in terms of quality/light in order to gain a wide and tele lens in one, which does neither effectively. i'm sure there're people who can do a better job of explaining that with more experience, but that seems to be what i've gathered. edit: new page, gotta start with a photo Missing out by SnipingForPacifists, on Flickr
  8. I'm gonna have the chance to invest in some glass quite soon and i'm torn between a 35 1.8 & 85 1.8 (or sigma's 1.4) or a 24-70 2.8. it'll be used mainly for portraiture (including environmental), so while the primes would seem ideal, the zoom also happily covers the desired focal lengths (on an aps-c camera too). whatever I get would also be used as a general workhorse lens for whatever i need/desire to shoot, which is where versatility would be useful. i'm leaning toward the 24-70, despite it being twice the price of both primes, but then again that saving could go in to lighting gear and whatnot #FirstWorldProblems here's a picture A view by SnipingForPacifists, on Flickr
  9. I'll pitch in I went with the D5100, the main reason was that i found a decent deal that was far cheaper than the equivalent canon, and as a first DSLR it's cracking, has the same sensor as the D7100, flippy tilty screen and not difficult to use although I haven't picked up a canon before so can't really compare but anyone with a braincell will hardly be flummoxed. i'd recommend going for body only (ignore the kit lens) and getting a couple of primes, 50 1.8 and 35 1.8 are brilliant quick and cheap all rounders. with that set up you'll be ready to go and can add accessories as you go.
  10. http://www.myshuttercount.com/ for checking shutter count and just google for the info on a particular body's life expectancy.
  11. a used 5d mkii from ebay is around a grand, it'd be worth finding out the shutter count before but as digitalrev has pointed out on several occasions, dslr's are built to withstand hell, i wouldn't worry too much as long as it isn't nearing the end of its shutter life (about 150,000). that'd be my upgrade for that price. if low light focusing is important then yeah probably look elsewhere, like the 7d. if new is important google is showing 1400+ only for the mkii however... zack arias' review of the fuji x100s makes a compelling case for it being the new leica. if i was going to avoid doing paid work and shoot only for enjoyment i'd consider jumping the dslr ship. permanently fixed 35mm focal length though would probably push me toward the xpro1
  12. might be able to get get a 2nd hand 5d mk2, or a d700. those are what come to my mind. or you could try one of fuji's x range. x100(s) or x-pro1, they seem nice
  13. Thank you, i've been considering light a lot more recently, i really want to get started with doing portraits. A lighting kit (softboxes, strobes etc) and either a 50mm 1.8 or 85mm 1.8 (because they're cheap ) are both on my shopping list Thanks, the expression just came naturally when confronted with the amount of work i have to do thank you for the kind words. i like to present pictures that feel as though there's a story behind them, with characters you can relate to or whom appear to have more to them than meets the eye. It comes from my inspirations in photography, mainly - Maciej Dakowicz, Zack Arias and an artist called Pahnl.
  14. Motivation by SnipingForPacifists, on Flickr so much uni work to do. but all that's on my mind is taking pictures. would like a flash & nicer lens though
  15. saw the zombie one earlier, thought it was fantastic. just avoid fields, vintage furniture, sunsets and balloons.
  16. ^nice I got inspired by Maciej Dakowicz's Cardiff After Dark series so decided to see if (the substantially quieter than Cardiff) Chester had anything to offer on a saturday night, here're a couple Communication by SnipingForPacifists, on Flickr Onwards by SnipingForPacifists, on Flickr considering he took thousands of shots over several years, wasn't too bad for just one night. I imagine when the horse racing season starts again there'll be some scenes.
  17. selective colour may be overdone and a bit cliché, (especially when that colour is red) but this was the only photo i took today and I quite like it. shame the weather is awful, we don't seem to be getting the snow the rest of the uk has, it just rains instead... also, what sites do y'all use for uploading/hosting your photos? i was thinking tumblr, flickr, although decent, has a limit and i don't fancy paying.
  18. Thanks, yeah i know what you mean, my own criticism of it is that the car on the left hand side should've been cropped out, also just the weighting of 'stuff'' on the left vs the right throws it off a bit. cheers, i'm gonna spend today trying to get the hang of it. the goal being to shoot competently in manual, eventually anyway
  19. Finally got myself a dslr. a Nikon D5100. have played with it a little but it was freezing cold outside and i'm still unsure how everything such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed etc works. in time it will come, for now i'm just enjoying playing around.
