The chords are lovely. It kinda reminds me of Soaked. It's got that feel to it from that era.

Third song by Matt that reminds people of Soaked. Time to move on!

I gave it another go. Heard it quite a lot of times now. Still not getting it.

You could say it to yourself in your room, it’s still acting entitled and you’re posting it on the band’s only official forum at the end of the day.

Muse have hinted/promised at a lot of things that haven’t come to pass or have taken a long time to come to fruition. A lot of it gets forgotten because that’s life and it’s very rarely a big deal. There was an initial demand for Zepp to be released because it meant pro-shots of modern Agitated, Yes Please, Futurism, Fury in its original key and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, combined with the fact that it was a very unique show because of all these happening at once and the 2nd encore. In the years since, we’ve had all that (bar Fury) and more from other shows, plus Futurism. So, if we’re not missing out on anything, what’s even the issue? You’re not paying for anything, they’re just putting a special performance of a few songs out to keep fans entertained. They don’t owe it to us, nor do any of the other artists or people trying to keep people entertained atm, so why feel the need to point the finger and say “pfff, well x person did more”? Of all the times and cases, this really isn’t the one to whinge about. Full gigs or no, it’s more unique/special than the Radiohead content you reckon they should be aspiring to anyway. It’s literally the only thing left from that gig that we haven’t seen anything like before. If you’re yearning for Micro Cuts, Dead Star et al, Youtube’s a click away.

You've turned soft since getting OOM.

OOS is a fantastic album but has pretty average b-sides tbh. Shine, I love. The Gallery, Bedroom Acoustics, Shrinking Universe and Map Of Your Head are good/decent. CTMEOY maybe?

But Host, Spiral Static, Twin, Recess, Con-Science, Do We Need This and Forced In are all “how did this not make the album” tier. Coma, Agitated, Nishe, Minimum and Yes Please aren’t a bad second rung either.

Abso and Black Holes have a couple of great ones but obvs very little.

Hey man, you're forgetting HCM and Nature_1, which along with Shrinking Universe are some of Muse's best. I also like The Gallery and Futurism a lot more than most of the Showbiz b-sides

Mad how superior Showbiz’s b-sides are to any other album era. It’s already my 3rd fave album without some of these on it, too much greatness to fit on one record.

Literally all of ‘em would be my answer. Would be such a fun time to see a Showbiz themed gig, we’ve already had an Origin one.

I'd say the OoS, Absolution AND BH&R b-sides are better. But the Showbiz ones are certainly...more

Ok, listening to the second Showbiz-Vinyl now: Spiral static, either it’s not on my CD (not the one from the box) or I somehow never heard it before? It’ beautiful!

There are kinda very high bells during the second verse of UNO? Never noticed before.. Sober grows on me, but I prefer the rougher earlier versions, sounds so polished here! I do love the (now clear) voices of Matt and Chris singing together 😍

The last song, always special 😎

I‘m happy with it, on my old CD it sounded all so ... compressed. Like putit all into one big pot and blast it out ... 😅🤨

    ok,

    Showbiz - B Sides 😍

    Recess omg 👍🎉😍😭

Should I stop? If not, to be continued tomorrow.

Spiral Static was the japanese bonus track, like Futurism, Fury and Glorious. Also the b-side to...Plug In Baby?

Also BREAKING Matt thinks Con-Science is one of their absolute best songs and seemingly has for a long, long time. They also really like the emotional rawness of Showbiz and the only reason they’re slag it off a bit is ‘cos of the lack of big hooks (which is still silly but surprising).

I believe the kids call it ‘tea’

Now THIS is the content I'm here for.

Okay here's the timeline (which is quite clear on the musewiki page for origin):

October 2000, Muse go into the sudio with Bottrill. PiB, NB, DS, Bliss and possibly some other song, are recorded while the band were high on Mushrooms. Some songs like PiB and Bliss are re-arranged from the versions the band had being played live.
Late October 2000, Muse go back on tour with PiB played with the OoS album arrangement rather than the showbiz tour arrangement.
    Refer to:

Late 2000-Early 2001, Muse return to the studio with John Cornfield and remix (not re-record) the songs from the David Botttrill sessions owing too many overdubs and poor mixing. The rest of the album is recorded and mixed during this time.

I honestly don't see where there is definitive proof of OoS demo's being left on the cutting room floor though I think it's a great shame there is no disc with the 2000 era live performances of OoS material but alas youtube has plenty of that material anyway.

The rest of the album wasn't recorded and mixed during that time. They remixed those songs with Cornfield at Sawmills, but then went on to record the rest of the new songs with John Leckie at Real World Studios and The Astoria, a houseboat studio. This is taken directly from Out of This World, page 116 and 117 in the 2014 edition.

Also, on the musewiki page for OoS it literally says: "New Born", "Plug In Baby", "Bliss" and "Darkshines" were recorded with David Bottrill in the middle of touring in late 2000, in Ridge Farm Studios, Surrey. The songs were recorded as if in a live situation, within a few days. The band later had to re-master the songs with John Cornfield after the tour was over, in order to make them suitable for release, as they were not satisfied with the mixing of these tracks. Matt attributes this to the effects of the hallucinogenics, which were "great for exploring new territory", but "certainly not good for finishing things off".

It doesn't say that "Some songs like PiB and Bliss are re-arranged from the versions the band had being played live", it says that the songs were recorded as if being played live.

Nope, Bothrill's sessions were in december 2000, in september/october 2000 they recorded a bunch of demos just before the final gigs of showbiz tour, in australia/japan/northern europe. And it makes sense, if they recorded the final version of plug in baby in october 2000, they wouldn't play the demo version in early november 2000....

I believe the " mushroom session " happened after the tour, and that led them to reach the OOS tone, so they created new arrangements for the demos they already had bliss, pib, new born, dark shines, and " the other " on the CD is probably hyper music or microcuts ( unfortunately there's no bootleg of that song but it was played at the end of showbiz tour )

That's the most plausible explanation, I think.

That's not really how it went down.  The mushroom session did happen during the recording session with Bottrill in December, and the result was apparently so crap that they had to remix the entire thing afterwards. So they were sent to John Cornfield who created the mixes for the final products. You can read about it in the book "Out of This World".

  9. I really like the acoustic version but it bothers me that it would have been so much better if they included the string arrangement that they had already written for the studio version. Like...why wouldn't you combine piano with strings when you have the option?? They add so much to the song.

  10. It’s not the GoT soundtrack. It’s a compilation album with sons that were inspired by the show.

and The International wasn’t really a solo effort, even if Matt seems to have done most of the work. In that case we could probably consider some of Muses songs solo efforts by Matt as well.
