  1. I haven't seen this publicised but the Budget takes away the ability of unis to have compulsory union membership. Okay fine, free association and all that but it means no union fees can be borrowed through the student loan. Seems like a National trick to undermine union membership. The savings forecasted are so minimal!

That's the one thing I disagree with the most about the compulsory membership. I understand the free association argument and all of that, but I don't think it's right to remove the compulsory membership. How many first year uni students are going to want to subscribe for it if they have to pay for it out of their own money? It's going to be tough for student unions to convince people to pay for the membership out of their own pocket.

As long as I haven't run myself into debt by next year, I'll pay for the membership, based upon all the ranting I've done about this in Wellington.

  2. Not so much Wellington itself- I'd just hate to be away from family and friends for a whole year. I'd get really lonely and probably become even more addicted to the internet than I already am, aha. Yeah, I'd hate the idea of missing out on all the developments with my friends and stuff.

I understand that. I'm reasonably close to home here, others are closer, but some are much further away. I've only been home during the actual semester break, but it's good to have the option if I need to, without paying up to $100 for a flight home. It's one of the main reasons I didn't end up going to Otago.

Is Labour going to come up with any credible policies this year or will they do the whole "attack the opposition" which obviously worked so well last election?

It really looks like they aren't even trying. :indiff:

What makes things worse is when National try and sugar coat everything, by saying things like "People will have the opportunity to decide whether a responsible approach to balancing the books and building growth is one they want to support".

  3. Hone Harawira and Don Brash having a live debate on Close Up =

    This is not going anywhere!

    That was hilarious.

I think Don Brash ended up looking like the bigger dick in this case. If Hone never said things like "Don't make this about me being Maori", he'd probably be a good MP.

  4. "What I don't like about it is the message it sends to young people is go out and borrow."

So obviously we either make them borrow more, ask their parents to pay for it completely, or they just can't go to university.

I love how this government blames all the problems their generation caused on our government.

  5. Seems like sensationalist bull. Id prefer seeing a real Waka but i guess it would be even more expensive. Hello, by the way haha!

Hello! Are you studying at Vic?

I'm taking a 'proper' bus for the first time in years today, I have literally no idea what to do.

Should be meeting Angus this weekend though. :awesome:

    Excite!

  6. Wellington is pretty exciting. There's a few media dickheads hanging around our hall since this Darren Hughes thing has come about.

I saw Heather Roy speak in the political science class the other day, it was a bit of a laugh.

  7. Hi Angus :awesome: I went into uni today to go get that sorted, my laptop just will not retain the settings I have though  I managed to get on once, and then I tried again and it failed :(

I can only use Firefox. All other programs that try to access the internet (outlook express, last.fm, etc) don't work because of the password system set up. But I'm trying to get that sorted.

MY FAMILY ARE OFFICIALLY ALL SAFE

my family and I are well.

    Really good to hear.

Officially the worst natural disaster in New Zealand now (or so say the news)

  8. Hey guys. I'm moved in now, Wellington is amazing. Finally got my internet sorted after four days.

The whole Christchurch situation is horrible. The few people I know are all fine, but so many people in my hall were affected by this. We had over 200 people sitting in a room watching the tv in silence for 3 or 4 hours.

  9. While it's obviously not true for the majority of cases, the people who would go into New World when I was working there, buy a budget load of bread and a budget milk (trying to be 'economical') and then ask for a $40-50 pack of tobacco disgust me.

  10. Move in on Sunday! Slowly packing my important things away.

I wanted to add in another maths paper for my first semester so it would easier to swap to a double major or degree next year if I decided to, but the online add/drop courses doesn't have it in the list. Might email them, but I could just wait til I'm there. Would I need to contact studylink about that if I do add it, or is that just if you drop out of a course?
