  1. Good song, not a great song, but still miles better than most of what they're released of the last 10/15 years. A nice return to proper heavy riffs, although the verses are crap imo. Just a means to an end really. I'll approach the album with caution given the last few but this is promising and will be excellent live.
  2. Only Sydney and Melbourne, what a joke.

    Dig Down

The only positive to Dig Down is that it isn't another Panic Station.
  4. SMBH is a really good song for what it is. I'm all for bands revolving and I embraced that transition from Absolution to BHAR. The 2nd Law though was terrible overall for me, summed up by how bad Panic Station is. They gave us a bit of everything with Drones and when it's good, it's really, really good. Dig Down, however, offers nothing new to what we've heard over the past six or seven years. It's just a shitter version, and is simply boring imo.
  5. After a few years of wall to wall disappointment, they suckered me back in with The Handler but it turned out to be false hope. Agree with the legacy comment, they're shitting on it with this nonsense.

    Dig Down

It's such a bad song. Along the lines of what I expected given the promo material in the build up, but I didn't expect it to be *that* terrible. It's probably worse than anything on The 2nd Law, and that was Muse's previous low point for me (along with Neutron Star Collision, obviously). The "they're trying something new" line doesn't wash this time because it's similar to the last seven or eight years only not as good as Madness or Dead Inside, ironically two song titles that reflect my mood after listening to it!
  7. Could not disagree more. Good, not great, album and they've gone downhill with every release from OoS until now. Drones is better than The 2nd Law but that could've been improved on with a collection of different pitch fart noises.
  8. After about 15 listens, most of the songs on the album have grown on me. This hasn't simply because it's absolutely rubbish. Dull beginning, middle and end. I'll be skipping it regularly I think, and it better not be part of the live rotation like Guiding Light was
  9. It actually sounds a lot better when listened to as part of the album as opposed to just on its own because the uplifting tone works very well coming out of the darkness of The Handler. The two evoke completely contrasting emotions and in that regard it has merit, even if it's no more than an average song.
  10. Sorry but not every song has a positive, whether it's by Muse or anyone else. Critical opinions are an important part of being a 'muser' - being able to see through your love of a band to assess something objectively. There are plenty who will like something just because it's Muse ("The chorus is actually really crap but it's Muse so yay! \o/), that for me is worse than picking apart the negatives.
  11. I get why people think that the solo too long but I can't wait to see it live and it's the perfect length for a bit of a breather between a stomping beginning and end. The whole thing just gets better with every listen.
  12. First of all, it's a lot better than The 2nd Law but that isn't saying very much. 1. Dead Inside - 'Modern Muse' in a nutshell and I've accepted this sort of thing as part of their sound. For what it is it's very good, especially the ending, but it's not the Muse I fell in love with. 7/10 2. Psycho - I've always liked the riff so that's a good start, and I reckon it'll sound excellent live. The lyrics are a bit shit but overall I like it. 7/10 3. Mercy - This is bad. Really, really bad. Like a camp version of Starlight, and I can see it being up there with Guiding Light as my worst live Muse experience come the next tour. 4/10 4. Reapers - Now we're talking. Cannot wait to see this one in the flesh, big fan of the sound all the way through with the various peaks and troughs. 8/10 5. The Handler - Comfortably the best song written since BH&R, it's flawless for me and I absolutely love the nod to In Your World before it cranks back up for an epic finish. Can't stop listening to it. 10/10 6. Defector - Not bad yeah, listenable but it's not something I have a great desire to see live. 6/10 7. Revolt - This is awful and they should feel bad for putting it on any album. 3/10 8. Aftermath - Boooooooooorrrrrrrrrring. Nearly dozed off halfway through. It's nice and inoffensive but really uninspiring. 5/10 9. The Globalist - I'm a bit underwhelmed. It's good but not as great as the hype lead me to believe (probably my own fault for buying into it). There's some great parts, the intro reminds me of Invincible, and it'd be cool to see performed. 7/10 10. Drones - Sorry lads, too far. 2 mins 52 secs I'll never get back. 1/10 (for effort) Overall: It's very hit and miss, though the hits are a lot better than the previous two records. I get the whole story thing and it's pretty cool in that regard, it's just that some of the songs telling it are utter wank. It's a return to form in some ways but also leaves me thinking about what might have been. There was potential for a great record and instead they've just made a good one. 7/10 Updated album ranking: 1. Origin of Symmetry 2. Absolution 3. Black Holes and Revelations 4. Showbiz 5. Drones 6. Resistance 7 8. 9 10. The 2nd Law
  13. I'm the complete opposite and Reapers is the only other song that *isn't* dull so far. Psycho has a nice riff but we've known about that for a decade, Dead Inside is no better than Madness which is rubbish by Muse standards, and Mercy...well, the less said about that nonsense the better. The Handler is more exciting than any song on either of the last two albums. It really doesn't, it won't even come close to OoS or Absolution.
  14. Just listened to Mercy and this back-to-back and it's like two completely different bands, one that's utter shit and the another that has me wanting more of the same
  15. So much yes! I've been critical of pretty much everything released so far (and most of the last few albums) but this is excellent. Without meaning to go over the top, it's the sort of song I've been waiting the best part of a decade for and it's a real return to form. Compare this to drivel like Mercy and it shows two completely different bands, hopefully the future direction goes the way of The Handler.
  16. We haven't heard the whole album yet so there's still a glimmer of hope but realistically, the signs are bad based on what's been released. Reapers and Psycho have nice riffs but that's about it for me. Nothing that would get me 'pumped' anyway, though that's probably been the way since 2006. Be careful about mentioning OoS around here, you'll be told to stop living in the past and to gtfo if you don't like that Muse have changed their sound since then
  17. Yep, started to nod off about a minute and a half in but managed to struggle on until the end. It was tough going but being able to survive such drivel is probably something can now go on my CV. It's always good to take a positive form bad experiences.
  18. Another disappointment, nearly fell asleep halfway through. The more I hear the less I'm interested in the new album, much like the last couple actually. At least they've been consistent I guess.
  19. I really hope it is, but when the lead single sounds like it is then it's hard not to be a bit worried. I hope it's the only one of its kind but recent history shows that there's a good chance of that not being the case unfortunately. Of course you can't please everyone but attacking someone because they don't get aboard the bandwagon is pretty stupid. The Queen/U2 comments are valid and I for one hate U2 so anything Muse does in that direction isn't going to work for me, and I'm entitled to say that. Telling people to get off the board because they don't tow the party line is hilarious God no. I think his music is shit and he's a tool, exactly like Bono actually, but that's about it. If people want to spend their hard earned to go see him then good luck to them.
