  1. Muse performs ONE song on the Tonight Show in the US (Tuesday 11/13) ...and it had to be Pressure. Why not pick one of the better tunes from the new album?

This makes me worry what the setlist is going to be like for the up and coming tour.

Pressure is a decent song, commercial, and once they get the hang of it will probably be pretty fun live. In the past it's always been songs like Dig Down, Mercy, Madness, and Starlight, so this is actually a nice change imo.

  2. I wouldn't say that ST isn't Muse-y. It's dark and dystopian and spacey and all that. It just doesn't line up with my personal musical tastes. I applaud Muse for experimenting with their music but it means that certain forays are bound to alienate some fans. People are calling Break It To Me a high point on the album and a Muse classic. I can barely stand to listen to it. Maybe it's a well crafted song or maybe it's not but it's certainly nothing that I would want to hear.

People lost their shit with the electronic, dubstep leanings of T2L. Love it or hate it, Madness was at least a well crafted pop song with great vocals, catchy groove, melodic guitar solo and a big emotional climax. Now here we are 6 years later and Muse have gone all-in with the electronics. Kudos to them for taking a risk but I'll take Madness and the rest of T2L any day over three-quarters of dull and/or unlistenable ST.

If it puts my opinion in perspective, I'm old enough to remember the post New Wave electronic stuff of the 80's like Depeche Mode, the Cure, Erasure etc that Muse are drawing from here...and I didn't like it back then either.

That's fine. I don't have any problem with people having different tastes. There are songs Muse have made which don't appeal to me at all but others seem to love.

You're still able to appreciate what Muse were going for, so I wouldn't include you with the people I was talking about.

  3. I don't really get why old Muse is only associated with heavy rock songs tbh. Do I love those songs? Sure, but what really got me into them and has stuck with me for all these years is the strange dark atmosphere they're able to create. Their best songs imo are the ones which can capture that mood regardless of the genre they use.

A lot of people act like the direction they went in came out of nowhere, but I can see a definite link between the songs on ST and songs they made in the Showbiz-BH&R era.

  4. I love Matt's vocals in the acoustic version so much. One of my issues with recent albums has been his tendency to go for heroic sounding vocals and a lack of sincerity in his voice.

This takes me back to the menacing tone of old Muse, and it's genuinely soothed my soul. haha

  5. Someone made a joke earlier but I’m curious, anyone know the fan reaction from other places like reddit/facebook? More/less positive than here or about the same? Seems like a slight majority to positive over here, with a few meh and negative reactions here and there.

From what I've seen reactions on twitter have been positive. Weirdly I think fans might appreciate this album more than critics because even though it's not exactly OoS, it's refreshing and has more spark than their last few albums. Especially with the alternate versions.

  6. I'm waiting until tomorrow to hear the album. It's great to see so much positivity on the board though!

I don't want to come across like a "old/heavy Muse is best Muse" fan, but are there any rockier or mosh pit moments on the album at all? Don't get me wrong I love a lot of Muse's pop songs, but I just feel that they're at their best when they rock out (especially live), hence why I was a fan of Drones (well, most of it).

I just hope the pop/synth flavour that's been described by everyone doesn't weigh too heavily on future setlists and we don't get all the new stuff alongside Madness et al.

These songs are much more fun than Madness. More along the lines of SMBH and MotP. They're not exactly rocking, but they're done in a way where I don't think you'll mind.

ETA: Actually, Blockades might fit what you're looking for.

  7. I've only heard Blockades twice but there was a section that instantly reminded me of Map.

Not once during any of the 100+ times that I've listened to TDS has it even even come close to reminding me of Map. It's like saying Red Ferrari and a Red Corvette are similar because they're red sports cars. The tone of those two songs is so far off from one another its a ridiculous comparison.

Dom's drumming in Blockades kinda reminds me of Map.

  8. This is the first album in ages where I feel like every song is more enjoyable when you listen to the whole thing rather than listening to them individually. It makes me really happy to be able to say that because I thought at most there would be a few I'd love and the rest I'd ignore.

Muse making a song like GUAF is something I've always dreaded, but at least it isn't another Guiding Light or Mercy I guess.

I love weird and sleazy pop Muse, so I really like Propaganda and BITM. Also thought the use of piano with the synthwave sound was great, and I wish they'd explored that more.

    Well done Muse!

  9. Have a lot of people from muselive gone to reddit? I always wonder what happened to them.

I'm glad .mu is still going -- sadly other forums I used to frequent are flatout gone. While I miss the days when it was super active, it's definitely more relaxed and balanced than it used to be. I never feel worried someone's going to bite my head off like I used to.

Something which bothers me about reddit in general is that between the interface and repeated memes, everyone just blurs together rather than having distinct personalities. The smaller subreddits are about as close to forums as I guess you can find these days, but I miss real communities like this.

  10. Yeah, that's what I figured. But even then there are more artistically pleasing ways to do it. This just looks bad.

Yeah usually if they want to go for a "natural" approach the photoshoot will reflect that. There's still a lot of photoshop going on here, and the lighting makes Muse look worse than they probably do irl, so it's just like the person had no idea what they were doing.

  11. I appreciate that Matt is taking a more personal approach with some of these songs and the general idea of the album. It's refreshing.

I think a lot of people are having that feeling of wanting to escape and revert to being kids. I see that as being part of why all these 90s sitcoms are coming back, and the growing desire for comforting entertainment (i.e. shows with a Bake Off feel).

  12. Oh man, I kind of love that. I love the sludgy, stompy, tribal feel and the ridiculously OTT robo voice. The little snippet of vocal you hear right at the end reminds me of the vocal delivery in Sign Of The Times. Dare I say it's also a bit NIN/Gary Numan even early nu-metal, sort of Hybrid Theory/Meteora vibe.

That chorus though sounds ripe for some srs beefing up live too.

I love it too. I just hope it keeps going somewhere interesting.

  13. The brass, the guitar reminiscent of Crying Shame, the relatively simple structure, the "Pressure building" bit that reminds me of SMBH...

Fair enough, I've seen a few people compare it to Crying Shame. That's a good point about SMBH.

  14. Don't tell me that you can resist singing these aaaaeeeeeaaaaah because I wouldn't believe you.

Edit: I also can't really feel the Abso vide but it totally sounds like a song from BH&R and we know Matt confuses these two eras a lot so maybe that's where his comparison comes from

Oh I like the aaAAAahhs, but I feel like they make the song a little lighter.

Really? I'm not getting that. Maybe Exo-Politics.

  15. Wtf

What? If you take away the backing vocals, the way Matt's singing and the more crunchy guitar bring to mind the type of catchy rock songs they had in the Abso era. I don't see what's so crazy about that. They were obviously heavier then, but I can see why Matt's mind went there.

  16. Are we just not allowed to dislike IBTY then? I mean, I have no problem if other people like it or not, I don't really care, but personally the lyrics kill it completely for me and I can't listen to it at all. It's probably one of my least favourite Muse songs and I don't care if it's supposed to be silly or not, I just don't like it. Or are we getting into 'true fans like every song' territory here?

Who said you have to like it? My comment wasn't serious. I just think it's an odd song for the author use as an example when there are plenty of Muse songs which are silly without the self-awareness.

  17. Awww. A much more pleasant way of teasing a new release than weird pictures of 80s cars, if you ask me.

I'm having a hard time envisioning (is there an audio equivalent of that word?) what the complete thing will sound like, but this was quite nice.

I like it as well, I think, because we have indeed been waiting for something human from Muse for a while. Something a little more intimate, heartfelt and less forced and artificial. But that may just be me.

I agree. I wasn't sure if Matt was capable of that anymore, but this brought me back to Showbiz and Hullabaloo.

I hope the final version has a similar feel.

  18. Love it. But I'm nhf I Belong To You hate. That song is absolutely delightful and cheers me up every time I listen to it.

Matt's lyrics make me cringe, but generally Muse being dorks doesn't embarrass me. They're good at what they do, and their early albums hold up better than a lot of other bands from the early 00s. The type of people who take music so seriously they'd shame you for liking them aren't people I'd want to be around anyway.

  19. What bothers me about articles like this is that the person obviously hasn't done much research, so it basically turns into someone having a whine that a band they don't like has fans. With Drones for instance, not saying it was done well or eloquently, but the point wasn't just "Drones are bad". Also found it weird how they didn't talk about Absolution.

Muse have something unique about them, they have an eccentric lead man, they sound great live, and every album has had at least a few fun songs. It's not that hard.

  20. See I disagree with that. I think this has been a growing problem ever since the Tea Party, and it finally reached the boiling point with Trump. Democrats have taken their base for granted because the only other option is Republicans, so their base wasn't energised enough to turn out when they needed to. I see it as similar to how people lost faith in Labour and didn't end up turning out for Ed Miliband in the 2015 election. The energy around Sanders and Trump implied people were looking for a change, yet they insisted on pushing Clinton. I'm not defending those Sanders people, but there were plenty who did vote for Clinton, and her side wasn't exactly innocent either.

That said I am hoping the Dems pull through and win in 2018. But I also hope they don't mess it up to the point that next time around people flip back to the Republicans.

Anyway, I'm sorry to go down a politics rabbit hole. It's just really nice to have a proper discussion about it. It's not really possible on social media and reddit is...reddit.
