After further listens: Algorithm - another strong album opener. Other than Dead Inside I don't think Muse ever flunked the opening song. Love the moody 80s synths and the brief sprinkle of piano. The Queen vocals make me chuckle, in a fond way. 8.5/10 The Dark Side - just a gorgeous track and Matt's vocals are outstanding. It has the sort of dreamy romanticism about it that I love about Muse and which was sorely missing for me on Drones. 9/10 Pressure - great fun song, with catchy hooks galore. 8/10 Propaganda - another sexy funky Muse gem. The little twangy solo in the middle is delightfully eccentric. 9/10 Break it to Me - I don't even know how to describe this song. Tom Morello marries Justin Timberlake in a Bollywood/Middle Eastern wedding? All these disparate elements shouldn't work together, but just do. Awesome awesome track, instant personal top ten Muse material. If I ever put together a belly dance routine to a Muse song, this will be my top pick. 10/10 Something Human - I've seen much negative feedback for this, but I actually think it's a lovely breezy number. Perfect placing on the album as well, something light after the intenisty of the previous songs. 8/10 Thought Contagion - The chorus and wooos help elevate what otherwise would be a pretty standard track. 7/10 Get Up and Fight - I don't mind most of the song, the female vocals are rather nice, but dear god that generic emo chorus makes me cringe hard. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to trash it from my album playlist or sit through the chorus for the sake of completism. 5/10 Blockades - yeah totally Muse Greatest Hits. Yet it doesn't feel like the band on autopilot and is somehow lots of fun. 7/10 Dig Down - really grew on me after my initial meh reaction, and I outright love the alternative version. 7.5/10 Void - excellent finish to the album. Great atmosphere, love the addition of strings. 8.5/10 All up I'm pretty stoked about ST and have been listening to it non-stop, which is exactly what I want my reaction to a new Muse album to be. The second half does drop off in quality somewhat, but then many of my favourite albums do as well, and it only dips from great to good (and Get Up and Fight).

Just listened to the album. I loved/liked almost everything Muse put out since OOS, but other than Reapers and The Handler I found Drones stale and disappointing and it was the first Muse album I didn't buy. I didn't think much of Dig Down either when it was first released and overall I began to wonder if Muse passed their use-by date. Well colour me very pleasantly surprised; Simulation Theory is the freshest they've sounded in a while and there's already a good handful of songs I loved from the first listen. Dig Down sounds way better in the context of the album, as well. The only track I'm not keen on is Get Up and Fight which is way too generic for my liking. Nice to be back on the Muse bandwagon, thanks boys... well middle-aged men really but whatever

Even though it's easily my least favourite song on The Resistance, I'm kinda sorry I didn't get to hear Guiding Light live.

Had a dream that I was at a Muse concert and the band was playing a bunch of Simon & Garfunkel covers and an utterly horrible version of Undisclosed Desires After every song, people were leaving the venue in droves.

I've no desire to hear either Showbiz or Micro Cuts at the Australian gigs and will be quite happy with the "shit" list that Europe and US got

I think it's quite possible that Muse do prefer to play their newer stuff, rather than the songs they've written 7-10 years ago. The bands/artists don't necessarily relate to their own material the same way fans do. People may say whatever they want about Black Holes/The Resistance, but that's where the band themselves are, at the moment. Not their past sound. And the vast majority of the gigs I've been, by any band/artist, usually veers towards the newer material plus a few more popular tracks from the older albums.

Something wrong or simply something different (which looks like wrong to one side)? All fanbases go through this as the band/artist change through the years.

I think that many people enjoy negativity and complaining, plain and simple. I can't see any other reason for why they'd be posting the same things over and over and over again.

I think that what many people in this forum truly love is Muse from 7-10 years ago. That band is no longer around.

Why is it so hard to believe that some people -gasp- might have an opinion on music different to your own? After all, Muse like Undisclosed Desires and I think I've seen Matt say in an interview that it's his favourite song on the album. Are they trolls too?

Same here. Overall I thought that the best tracks on The Resistance were the ones that did -not- attempt to replicate their earlier harder style. Apart from Guiding Light, MK Ultra and Unnatural Selection are IMO the least interesting songs on the album, I love Muse's rocking side as much as anyone but these songs are nowhere near their best rock songs.

A couple of days ago I had a dream that I was at a Muse concert, some kind of arena I think, yet I didn't dream from the perspective of my seat - more like I was watching a movie. The band barely got into the first song when Matt suddenly broke down in tears, I mean real blubbering kind of tears, and walked offstage and the concert was cancelled. Very odd.

There's more to good singing/voice than hitting really high notes. And personally, if it means that I will never hear either of these songs live, then thank god he can't sing them anymore.

Well, I've yet to see Matt and Kate Hudson in my favourite trash magazines, I'd say that they're quite a low-key couple, all things considered. And all the paparazzi stuff comes naturally with dating a famous Hollywood actress; is Matt supposed to give up dating someone he likes because they're famous? I don't give a fig if I don't hear Bliss, Citizen Erased and MK Ultra at a Muse concert.

Totally agree, Matt sounded like an angsty shrill teenager back in the days. I only really love his voice on BHaR and later - even on Absolution his vocals are too adolescent for my liking. I think that MK Ultra is the second-weakest track on The Resistance and I won't be sorry at all if I never hear it live again. I find it utterly bizarre that, for many people, Muse's live shows seem to go from "sucks" to "rocks" based on the inclusion of one or two old songs
