Spent some time over the weekend shifting everything around - just threw the kit up quickly having got it home from the shop. That smallest tom still isn't ideally placed but having always been a 1 up 2 down player that may not be too much of an issue. Will only really get the proper feel on Wednesday on practice night where the kit will be set up and will stay (can't play it at home - have to use the electric kit). That will be the first time the kit gets used in anger.....though as Adam says, it will be somewhat difficult to hit something so nice and new and shiney !!

Thanks for sorting the tags mate...I tried to enter em in as manual links at first...they should now work as direct links as well now as just tweaked em again...but all now on show thanks to you as well. Yep..am well pleased...and a real lovely sound. With everything there is was about £2,600 all in. Which I am pleased with bearing in mind the Tama shell set alone was going to be £2,300 .... and that was only for one up two down. I get an extra tom with this which I wasn't really looking for but with the set up to the left hand side it still gives me the one up two down layout anyway...with an extra tom to the side if I need it.

Well I didn't go for the Tama Starclassic kit in the end....couldn't wait the 20 week delivery !! Treated myself to this though which was in stock. Mapex Orion Drum kit in Burl Maple Coffee Burst with Black Nickle Hardware. Piccies below for anyone that is interested...had to throw it together in the nippers room for now... http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o183/stakka_album/DSCN1487.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o183/stakka_album/DSCN1495.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o183/stakka_album/DSCN1491.jpg 12” and 13” Rack Toms 14” and 16” Floor Toms 22” Bass 14” x 6.5” Black Panther Birds Eye Snare Zildjian Custom A Cymbal suite - 18” & 16” projection Crashes. 20” Ping Ride. 14” Mastersound Hats. Yeah...your talking about £2,400 just for the Bass, 1 rack and 2 floor toms...hence I'm wanting to make sure it is worth it. Must be the Bubungs....burbinga, boobinga...whatever it is !! I'd have it in the Maple like a shot which would be £400 cheaper but they only do that finish in the bur.... boo.... buur...you know what I mean. Flippin gong bass looks like a world war two searchlight stuck up there. Would have looked at home on the HAARP tour stage methinks !!

Yep..."nice" and "sexy kit" are words that I constantly utter...but it ain't a cheap kit and I am just wondering if I am being drawn in by the looks and the name...rather than what I am actually getting for my money. It is nice though...and if I don't go for it and get something cheaper or different will I then be thinking.."if only I had" I guess what I am looking for is someone who knows their drums to say..."don't worry, its a good bit of kit and you won't be dissapointed with the sound / quality" or "don't be daft fool, waste of money..etc"..... ...but it is nice and sexy innit....

Talking of new kits being ordered.....I am that close to ordering this kit - without the gong bass I might add - even if Dom has one (and he puts it in a much more sensible place.) I just love the finish and the layout - but it looks like Tama only do it in Bubinga wood. Not had a lot of experience with that though.....any thoughts? I'm going back to the shop at the weekend to work out a price and which sizes to order, if I feel like going for it - but I'm already sold on it methinks. Will be my first acoustic kit having played Electric kits for a while. Any last thoughts before I commit ???

On the subject of Iron Cobra HH stands - am just about to invest in one (to match my IC bass pedal). Any pro's and cons between the 805 and 905 ? And I see the ole double bass pedal issue has arisien again. Thought I made it clear last time - Single pedal, that's it...nuf said

Zilcho's idea sounds good as it will give you flexibility. I switched from 2 up 1 down to 1 up 2 down a year ago and am now sticking that way. Not sure if it would limit certain styles of playing but I really now prefer it that way. Dare I say it but imho I think the 1 up 2 down just makes a kit look that bit erm...cooler...as well. It can also give you a slightly better presence on stage as well if you play in a group, you don't get hidden behind your toms quite so much......which could be an important factor....to us vain ones

You're a star...thanks. You've hit a few key apsects of what I was keen to start understanding..The other area was how important is the tom hardware as in lugs and mounting - any partcular do's and don'ts...or is that just really down to prefs? I'll get xmas out the way and then start seriously looking - certainly along the lines you have said. Before I get in danger of spending some money I'll pop back

Although you do not get a better sound, upgrading to the mesh heads - especially the larger ones - really makes difference. From a spend point of view I can probably aim fairly high but at a quick glance there seems to be an area between 600 and 1400 pounds where a lot of kits are but do you really notice that much difference from the 2 extremes?. I'll pitch in somewhere in that area if need be (for bass, 1 up, 2 down toms and a snare) but only if it is worth it. I really wouldn't know if my money was going towards getting better looks or better sounds? (but it does have to look nice !!) I play rock / pop with inspirations from Foo fighters, stereophonics, muse, killers, manics etc...and I like that nice rounded deep sound - with a couple of deep floor toms and a nice crack of a snare. My TD12 has maple, birch, oak kit sounds and the maple seems to give the sound I am looking for but I have little real experience of different "real" acoustic kits - the Roland has spoilt me somewhat and made it too easy to just get in and play. I mess around with all the settings till it sounds nice but having to commit to an acoustic kit which will give me one sound and knowing which sizes and materials of shell is a little boggling.

Saw the talk about electric kits. Just further upgraded mine - and dare I post a photo of a "rubber kit" on such an esteemed website ha ha. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o183/stakka_album/drums.jpg Get one set up properly - as in sound settings and layout (most show models are just thrown together and are left with default sound settings) and you will probably never need another kit again. The TD12 and TD20 sound modules are just awesome, top notch samples of every kit you can imagine, with full editability to change nearly every shape / aspect / nuance of each single drum / cymbal. Both bands that I jam / mess around with were gobsmacked when I first used it .... and yes guitarists paying respect to a drum kit !!! But Adam is right that the sounds originally come from acoustic kits, and I admit they just don't look the part....but being able to play anywhere and any hour of the day is pretty handy ! I am saving for an acoustic kit though (cos I just want one !!)..but where the feck do you start ?

Thanks...yeah I too find heel up is easier on the ankle but the downside is that it tends to push my balance off over to the left whereas having the heel down gives you more of an anchor to the floor. I shall persevere though on the heel up.

I see he has a range of vids on youtube under "xeviworld"...actually he seems quite a nice helpful chap probably just turns psyco when behind the drums I don't think he is playing anything "wrong" ...he is just improvising...which is the term I use when I can't play something exactly heh heh. Anyway chaps...getting better on repetitive bass playing (single pedal only.... ahem) but still struggling after a minute or so and can't decide whether heel up or down is better / less painfull / or easy to keep going. Any thoughts as to how to keep practicing there and to nail it. Typical rythm would be like 3 beats then no beat at fairly brisk pace...e.g. Foo fighters "times like these". As always...yr advice appreciated....

But of course, I was always looking for a friend who... .....let's me have a bash anytime on their "real" (acoustic) kit ......bigs me up on my drumming skills (you have a broad imagination I take it!) .......gets me vip tickets to top gigs ....all the usual stuff ! I need to be careful to some extent but you never know - we might be able to sort something - especially if there is great buy 2 get 1 free deal
