for the person looking for an all purpose ride, check out medium's, k custom is a goodun, and as far as versatility is concerned, check out the k heavy rides, mines the 21" and i've never played something that it cant handle, i play everything from swing jazz to muse rock stuff. highly recommended. although it's a k it's easily heard above my other cymbals (as and a customs) because its a heavy weight, its got a clear ping and a warm spread.

the 18" trash and 20" crash of doom he uses. i got a china for my birthday i tried them all out and i wasnt too impressed with the fx range, i went for the 19" k custom dark china. perfect blend of trashyness and musicality. just cause dom's sounds good doesn't mean they all will. learn.

do what i did mate save up and buy cymbals you want one at a time. Those sabian packs maybe pro quality but you cant choose what you want. You maylike say the crash but if you dont like the hats or ride you've pretty much wasted your money. for 200 you can get some excellent hats, or a ride, or a crash + splash for that much. if i were you i would save up and get around 400 then buy the hats and ride together at the same time, that way you can hear both played together. but if you cant i'd suggest buying in this order: #1 hats, #2 ride, #3 crashes, #4 effects. good luck p.s. i bough a 18" avedis medium crash at the weekend, bloody amazing!

You can't gig with sh!tty brass cymbals like that you'll get no projection or decent sound or nuffink. Shame on your for breaking the beloved a customs If I were you I would save up (if possible) and get the new A Custom Medium, or A Mediumsthose won't break, and are ten fifty milliontimes better than solar or 101.

i use earplaugs underneath headphones, that does the trick. I recommend headphones, that way you can have personal cd player headphones underneath the isolation headphones, so you can hear the music clearly and barely the drums.

^^^ If you record anything it ends up sounding different to what the drums sound like in person. Â What some people do is tune to intervals, 4ths I think, example: hum the first part of "Here comes the bride"...but youve only got 3 toms so...the first or last 3 hums I guess. Â What I do though is just tune them to what sounds best to you, their 'sweet spot' as its normally known as. Â If possible, definately if you plan on gigging with the kit, tune them in a big venue, not your room. Becuase they'll sound horrible when you play them live if youve tuned them in your room. Â You've got pinstripes so theyll eliminate any overtones that most people dont like. But dont add anything else to them, or you may aswell be hitting a dead cardboard box or something. Â Spend more time tuning the bottom / resonant / ones you dont hit side of the drum, becuase thats what you actually hear more of, not the top / batter / side you do hit. Â It'll take hours to achieve good results, and its frustrating the first... 50 or so times you tune them, but after that youll learn to love tuning and itll be an orgasmic experience

Very nice choices of the hats and ride May I ask why you're getting sabian crashes with zildjian hats and ride? Seems odd to me, becuase I'm sad, I have to everything of the same company.

what heads you getting? Get some Aquarian's! first time i've had them and they're killer, specially the superkick on the bass. for 2 ply over 1 ply check out double thins over classic clear or for 1 ply over 7.5 ply check out classic clear over hi-frequency thats what i recommend for toms

I've never seen that sort of memory lock before, it must be some special Tama one? You can get normal little ones anywhere really, just make sure it fits onto the stand / clamp / whatever. All the big companies have them, DW, Pearl, etc, can't go wrong with a named brand.

That memory lock look ugly, it takes up space and make your drums and stands look naff, what I do is just put a permanent marker where the tom or floor tom leg height goes, and it's unviewable. And when you want to reposition / re move something, white spirit takes it off. Â Tadaa.

Stores buy in starclassic maples individually and sell them as kits. E.G.: They order a bass and couple toms and sell them as 'a kit.' You can custom order anything on the starclassic birch and maple lines but in some cases it may take upto 6 months for when the store phones them up for you and when you actually recieve it Custom order includes: tom sizes 8x7" through to 24x18", undrilled birch bass drum, 20 or so finishes in laquer or 3 choices in wrap, sound focus rings, gold AND black hoops (though if you want black, the drum store will say it's not available...but it is) and klots more look on tama.com i know lots about starclassic kits becuase i'm getting one soon (yay!) and my drum teacher is endorsed by them so i'm constantly been given all this information P.S. If you're thinking of buying a tama kit wait until 2005: something new and special is coming out!! (i can't say much more as it's classified info)
